UNM Graduate Students

I would this group to be a way for graduate students socializes with one another. It seems as though it is easy to get isolated in a department and a building. It would be wonderful be able to socialize with other intelligent, driven individuals.

Hi there other two people....
I'll be a grad student at UNM in the fall. I'll be in the MFA program.
And you?

Hi, it's Nova - can a UNM Grad Alumni join? I have an MS in Exercise Science from UNM, but will be going to U of Hawaii for MA and PhD in Psych this fall. I will need to keep up with Buque & the desert when I am out on the water - uh, I mean when I am swamped with homework.

Ha! Very funny. My heart bleeds for you. Happy to have you here.

I expect I will be swamped with homework - I haven't even gotten there and they are already talking thesis talk...

Wow, that does seem a bit early. How long is the program? I'm doing and MFA in creative writing and, though nobody's mentioned it, I've been thinking about what I'd like to do for my dissertation. All that and I still have 4 day until I graduate with my BA.

Did you get any sort of assistantship?

Good to think about your dissertation now. Those who don't end up spending more than the 3 years here.... and what I hear is that if you know going in what you're going to do-- or at least have an idea-- you can use the writing workshops to begin pieces of the dissertation be it essays or chapters or poems. Otherwise when you are in dissertation hours you're sort of starting from scratch.

Hey, you are both in creative writing? I am only 18 hours away from a BA in English - creative writing track - I swerved off into Psych & never finished the CW BA - on the other hand, winding up with 2 BA's and 2 MA's would be a little silly, tho the MA in the Doc program is a non-terminal MA...

D - I will have tuition waiver & a stipend - I don't know yet whether it will be a GA or an RA at first - I hope RA because I like research & it's an 11 month rather than a 9 month stipend. Either way will be good - I worked full-time nights all thru my MS and it was exhausting AND frustrating - you can't spend the time you want on your projects...

Incidentally - do you call it a dissertation or thesis for MFA?
Comment by JeSais on May 12, 2009 at 10:23am
its called a dissertation for the MFA-- it is a terminal degree.

It seems to me that Psych would make a good minor (or major) for a CWer. I also have enjoyed my anthropology classes and they seem like they'd do a similar trick. I took a minor in film, and took three screenwriting classes because of the mphasis the instructor puts on storytelling.

Huh. It's a thesis for MS/MA in Psych.

Psych and Soc are good for initiating interesting insights into character - I was surprised when I first took Sociology classes (I have a Soc minor). Having had an emphasis on individuality during my (ongoing) formative years, I did not think I would learn so much about myself in a class dedicated to social aspects of things... but we are actually an extremely interactive bunch (as witnessed by what we are doing *right now*).

OK - fast answer - favorite movies?

Ghost in the Shell
Usual Suspects
Under a Tuscan Sun
Crouching Tiger, etc.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I actually like LOTS of the Classics & other Officially Good Movies, but I shall fight being be embarrased by my answer-fast list. I consider it the usual 'grad students need a break from thought once & awhile' sort of list.
