I recently joined urban bee and attended Ken's workshop. I've been reading tons of bee stuff and went to Tor C with a beekeeper to do some work on his 25 hives down there. So far from my very limited knowledge base, I think I'd like to go with top bar hives, hoping to start my own next spring. I live in Cedar Crest and am willing to travel to learn from some tbh beekeepers. otis 286-0047 or ojschubel@yahoo.com

I'll see many of you at the Beekeeping Seminar at Ken Hays place this Saturday. Don't forget to RSVP and bring your potluck item. :-)

KOB had a top story tonight about a tree that fell in the south valley and it was filled with bees! Someone from Hays' operation in Bosque Farms is taking several days to remove the bees (they say 60,000) and find the queen.

I am interested in carrying local honey at New Mexico Tea Company. Is anyone that is a part of this group interested in selling their honey wholesale? i think the bears would be the most merchantable.

A quick correction to my earlier post about the training day on April 26th in Bosque Farms. It has been pointed out to me that this is not an event officially sponsored by the New Mexico Beekeepers but is instead presented by Ken Hays himself. The remainder of the post is correct.

Save the Bees with Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Honey Bee Ice Cream!!! Proceeds from each pint will fund honeybee research and help build up the honeybee population.

An article Forbes wrote: http://www.forbes.com/prnewswire/feeds/prnewswire/2008/02/19/prnewswire200802190803PR_NEWS_USPR_____CLTU011.html

"To further spotlight the issue, the Haagen-Dazs brand is launching a new honey bee-dedicated flavor in February 2008 -- Vanilla Honey Bee. The brand is also tagging all of its honey bee-dependent flavors -- from Haagen-Dazs Wild Berry frozen yogurt to Caramelized Pear and Toasted Pecan ice cream -- with a HD loves HB(TM) icon. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the new flavor and all HD loves HB tagged flavors will be used to fund the $250,000 donation to UC Davis and Penn State. "

Spread the word folks!

A quick note for any of you who are not members of Albuquerque Beekeepers and didn't already hear about this -- the annual seminar and training day sponsored by New Mexico Beekeepers Association is scheduled for Saturday, April 26th, 9AM- ?PM. This is a free event, open to all and is a great way to learn about beekeeping. The event is held in Bosque Farms. The morning sessions are presentations about honey bees and various equipment, the basics of beekeeping. A mid-day break for a pot-luck lunch and then hands-on sessions in the bee yard for those who want to get up close and personal in the afternoon. Newbies are matched up with experienced beekeepers to look inside the hives and evaluate what is happening with the colony.

RSVP is required if you want to attend (869-2369), expect to be assigned a category of dish for the pot luck and here is a map link.

If you think you might like to learn how to play with bees, this is the place to find out.
