Touring New Mexico: Emory Pass

In northern New Mexico, La Bajada is the hill to remember.  Down south, that honor falls to the towering heights of Emory Pass.  The difference is that the road over Emory Pass has not been straightened out--and though paved, it is still steep, narrow, twisting, and perilously beautiful.

Emory Pass is the highest point on NM Highway 152, which winds its way from I-25 at Exit 63 just south of Truth or Consequences through Hillsboro, Kingston, and over the backbone of the Black Range west to Silver City.  The elevation at the top is 8228 feet, a whopping 4000 feet higher than Caballo Lake, whose diminutive reservoir 35 miles away is visible from the summit.…

Those familiar with Rudolfo Carrillo's work will absolutely love this new piece.  As the title suggests, a marvelous, complicated trip awaits the reader.  "I dreamt Orion was invisible." says the poet.  So that pretty much leaves us to wander without his familiar presence.  Yes, "The hunter lies beatifically below the wicked horizon."

Rudolfo Carrillo is an artist and writer who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He studied art at the University of New Mexico. He has worked as a welder, projectionist, journalist, and educator.  His work has been published in all sorts of places, but mostly on the interwebz and in newspapers like the Albuquerque Journal and the Weekly Alibi.
