Black History Month - Burque Style

We’re smack in the middle of Black History Month and don’t I just know it? I’m getting emails from friends who are performing all over this town and the state, and our grown and almost grown children are asking Dad questions about the time he met… Continue

Thanks for your comment! I've been lurkily reading and appreciating your blog posts for some time now :)

On this particular stint of commuting (i.e., for about a year - the various ways in which I've been commuting in and out of Albuquerque over the past decade are so complicated they confuse even me) I've been going back and forth to Utah about every two weeks. Not as far as DC, so I can't complain too much! But I, too, have begun to notice familiar faces in the airport...it's interesting that so many of us seem to be doing this!

I couldn't agree more maybe they are all negative people and have no understanding of those who live here. As far as posting links, i have not the kno- how. Maybe you could show me sometime. But I really think ABQ is the Greatist city on Earth.

Hi BB, So you teach at UNM and have a little hideaway apt in the dorm? Sounds rather fabulous to me. I'm so impressed with people who run blogs like this on DCF or anywhere--I spew out little poems but lose things in containers like computers and file cabinets. Maybe if I follow your blog--or, let's say, figure out how to follow your blog, I will learn about DCF blogs. I have a page but let's not talk about that until, maybe, I find it someday. I have some other blogs out there too--one for poems, one for prose, but . . . They for a while fed into my Facebook notes. Ok--enuf bout that. My last fav book is JM Coetzee's "Disgrqace." before that, jack gilbert's book of poems "Refusing Heaven." he's a heart throb of a poet, oh my. Just bought his new publication--"The Dance Most of All." Will delve in soon. I teach poetry cw workshops at CNM and essay classes, tho I am just about retired--part-time. Nice to meet you, Barelas Babe--

Hi Teresa, Life IS good, thanks for asking! I guess I need to dig up a recent snapshot and post it on Facebook! As for identifying you by the purple hearing aids, don't forget I also know that you are GREEN and a Lou Ferrigno fan. I sadly no longer haul that Fender Jazz bass guitar around. Sweet instrument. I still play the guitar, mostly acoustic and classical these days.

Actually I understand fully. I grew up speaking French, but never lived in a French-speaking country, so when I am in one, I have to concentrate very hard to get all the nuances and meanings. I find it focuses my mind (producing clarity) while being something of a strain. And I was indeed generalizing. I hate public speaking, and like to think that that aversion is a big part of why I became a writer. There are lots of reasons though... Glad to hear you find it as enthralling as you do.

thumps and bumps in the freshman dorm? Am I being too literal as a reader? Sorry I didn't get to speak with you at Jon's potluck--

It's actually not short ... it's about 20 minutes. Basically, she's funny, engaging and opening questioning her success as a writer. She talks about how after the success of "Eat, Pray, Love" many people key saying, "aren't you frightened to death of never being able to match that success again?" And how she feels that's not the point, that she never expected that success, she merely does what she does. She's frightened of many things, but not succeeding again like isn't one of her angsts.

No kidding. I was semi-serious. If you watch her video at TED, you'll see what I think is surprisingly reflective public speaking for a writer. Questioning motivations, occurrences ... openly asking why. Perhaps not fully Socratic, but certainly no your typical writer, who either gets paralyzing stage fright (moi) or basks in the spotlight. She showed neither tendency ... which makes her highly suspect as an author (ha-ha).

Yes. a name change is on the horizon. Long story short, started working for Relay New Mexico...but state is now outsourcing that service, so we're focusing on promoting our nonprofit ALD retailer, hence the faux pas! I don't think I'm ready for 3.0! I'll update my profile soon...Thank for 2 cents:)

Yes, I checked out your profile today. Although I've heard of you (yes, you're famous in these circles) we haven't met, until now. I'm relatively new to the Deaf/Hard of Hearing world and have met many great people. I don't actually have hearing loss myself (yet), but came aboard here thanks to my background in media. Good to meet you :)

Barelas Babe - I have been itching to read that book, I've read two articles about it recently that have alternately impressed and enraged me. Glad it is well written, although the story alone would be enough. As a transplanted from the East, Black…

Hey BB, if I can call you that! Great post. I am first on the library waiting list for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks...I can't wait, though I expect to be angry when I finally read it. I read about HeLa cells when I was a little kid, in Ebony…

Wow, call me uninformed, Barelas Babe. I'm a graduate of AHS ('57) and never knew that AHS was segregated. I was aware of the segregated southern NM schools and how Brown v. Board changed that in 1954, and I am aware of the achievements of Owen Smau…
