Ghosts of Halloween Past

Each Halloween is a little bit different. Some years I dole out the candy one by one, concerned that I may not have purchased enough to last the night. Other years the trick-or-treaters are few and far between, and I start tossing in generous handfuls of candy so… Continue

Hey, welcome! Thanks for checking out our new site. We hope you dig it.

As you look around, here's some info that might help describe how it works.

Theresa,

Great to hear from you! Let me know when the defense is...I"m still working adjunct at UNM, which has a few perks but is getting a little old. Making lots of art, though -- commissions and everything! Actually one of the things I"m loving is teaching the Prof ethics class at UNM, which is mostly business and medical ethics. I'd love to chat with you sometime about it!
Send me more news -- I'm sorry we've been out of touch.

Gracias, Barelenya, for the e-friend invite. I've been enjoying your neighborhood tales and photos, will have to explore a bit when I visit the NHCC for Spanish classes.

I just read the rooster post and i love the idea of the sunny front porch and lap user vs the street smart rooster.

I guess before all that traversing the globe we have to start out somewhere; my first home was in Barelas, 7th St & Iron, and later 6th & Iron. We used to do our grocery shopping at El Cambio on 4th, buy music at Christy records, attend mass at Sacred Heart (baptism, confirmation, first communion) in the gym that was converted to the current church--I remember the gym floor lines underneath the chairs & pews. I did first grade at Coronado and bought candy after school at Berna's store on 5th. Oh, I also went to Barelas community center for kindergarten! Those murals in the main hall always fascinated me. And they used to have the greatest carnivals with all the rides. Then we moved to the SE heights.

I just read your blog on the Posadas in Barelas each holiday season; you know I don't ever remember that from my childhood. And I recall many things from my childhood. The local news always had something from the San Jose neighborhood, and I always wondered what it was all about as we never attended, but I don't ever recall hearing about or seeing the events in the Barelas neighborhood--and we lived a block away from the community center. I'll have to keep it in mind next time we're in town for the holidays. Great post, by the way!

Hey, there. We lived down on 6th street, just south of Iron. I walked south on Barelas Rd a hundred yards or so to the center when I was in kindergarten each day. It was a great place down there. I have many fond memories of the area. I asked my sister, who is many years older than me, about the Posadas and she doesn't recall ever seeing it there. Because I attended many functions at the center we would have remembered it, but neither of us have any recollection. When did they start? She says it sounds wonderful and would love to see it. I'll have to find those old pics of the center and download--one of these days....

Yes, it's a '74. What's wrong with your '68? Does it run? The only person I could suggest would be Taos Garage on Atrisco. It's not really worth paying someone to do a restoration as it would cost much more than the car would be worth in the foreseeable future. Depending on the condition of your car, you might be better off selling it and buying a better car. If you'd like, I could take a look at it. I live on Park in the Huning Castle neighborhood.

That is one cool pumpkin! Thanks for the picture of the cat, also.

I think frost aged pumpkin sounds lovely, maybe it needed fancy sauce. I am surprised that the chickens didn't eat the pumpkin, I my experience they eat everything except citrus.

BB--much like the link mombat posted, Beggar's Night was simply going out the evening prior. We tried it once in Denver back in th '70s, but they had no clue and after what felt like brutal admonishment by residents we went back home. Empty handed...

Being asthmatic I had flu concerns myself - simple fix. I got scrubs, an isolation mask and gloves from a friend who works in an ER and greeted all the trick-or-treaters dressed as a medic! The kids loved my "costume" and were none the wiser.
