Profile Information

Where I Live:
Albuquerque, Yeah!
About Me:
Plants play a big role in Blake's life, from his summers spent in the Willamette National Forest in Oregon as a fire lookout on top of Sand Mountain, to his current job promoting native grasses, grown locally in High Country Gardens' greenhouses, to the rest of the world. No wonder he considers himself a desert succulent.
Favorite Thing(s) About Albuquerque:
When you've spent a few winters in places where the sun only comes up for a couple hours -- behind a raincloud -- Albuquerque is a blessed paradise.
What I'm Reading:
Anything about the Civil War and Lincoln (go Union!), "Piaf" for the ninetieth time, and "1421" by Gavin Menzies about China's discovery of North America before Europeans

Can You Believe It: The Dance Party of the Summer?

Posted on May 28, 2008 at 5:53am 2 Comments

Giacomo Zafarano and Desiree Telles perform dips while taking cues from Joseph Gonzales.

What does it take to transform the basement of an old fraternity house on UNM's campus into a rollicking dance hall? A well tuned body. . .of talent, that is.

Local dancer and independent producer Joseph Gonzales, who recently performed in Copelia and Seasons as one of the… Continue

Jim Baca Says ATVs and ABQ's Arroyos Don't Mix

Posted on April 28, 2008 at 7:52am 25 Comments

On a recent bike ride along the bosque’s riverside trail where it flanks the Tijeras Arroyo, I spotted two men on four-wheelers in the bottom of the concrete ditch, gunning their way west toward the river. This is the end of the miles-long run for the Tijeras Arroyo, which carries runoff all the way from the Sandias through the city and eventually merges with the South Diversion Channel before cascading through the outfall (an image-rich word… Continue

Jesus and Shapiro Speak in Parables for Revolutions' Free Speech Comedy Art Series

Posted on January 29, 2008 at 4:51pm 3 Comments

Why does Jesus curse? He was a carpenter, after all, and besides, his second coming appearance at Revolutions International Theatre Festival is made easier for us mere mortals when he talks like a real human being and not the Almighty.

Comedy Jesus, played by Troy Conrad, was preaching to the…
