Johnny, you have a great eye! Sandhill Cranes come in two sub-species - Lesser and Greater. Most of the cranes I saw that day were Greater, but the one you spotted is a Lesser. Besides being smaller overall, their bills are proportionately smaller...

Victor tipped me off via Twitter that he had seen lots of cranes at Los Poblanos Open Space fields. I checked it out on Thursday and saw a hundred or more cranes and a large flock of Cackling Geese. Here is a photo (click for a larger version):

I'm with Bill...don't shop Wal-mart! My local feed-store carries 50# sacks of seed...and other sizes, as well. I've done a price-check...and believe it or not they compete with Wal-mart...or are less than a $1-a-bag-more! Besides, most Wal-mart s...

Bosque Bill added a discussion to the group Burque Bikers
Construction began last Friday (Nov 6, 2009) on the new bridge across the rio. It will run along the north side of I-40 and connect to the bikeway on the east side. I haven't seen the plan for the west end. The bikeway (Bosque Recreation Trail) i...

Profile Information

Where I Live:
North Valley in the little neighborhood immediately southwest of the Alameda Bridge called Bosque Dell Acres.
About Me:
I was born and raised in Albuquerque, was in the first graduating class of West Mesa HS, but was away for many years and am very happy to be back home!

Follow me on Twitter... http://twitter.com/Bosque_Bill
Favorite Thing(s) About Albuquerque:
Birding, biking, the bosque & Beethoven... that about sums it up. Check out my website for a comprehensive list of birds found in these parts, for an interactive map of biking and hiking trails in the bosque and foothills, and more.
My Website:
http://www.bosquebill.com
What I'm Reading:
Been reading the Lord Peter Whimsey series by Dorothy L. Sayers - very well written mysteries set in those golden days of the 1920's in England after the Great War and before the Depression.

I read all the time, always have. My first choice is quality Science Fiction - love space opera, adventure & explorations, and aliens (no, sorry, don't believe they've landed... and you should be glad they have not!) I'll dip into thrillers and/or mysteries from time to time. Anything to escape reality.

Ironic, as my TV habits are just the opposite, mostly non-fiction, as seen on Discovery Ch., PBS, History Ch., Science Ch., ESPN, etc.
What I'm Listening To:
WGBH Classical HD2; SkyFM Mostly Classical; Classic FM Nederland; Dave Brubeck - Time Out; Beethoven

Obviously, I don't use this blog very often. No, I'm not asleep, I'm doing other things such as posting to Burque Birding or Open Space or Born in Burque or Westside or Isotopes Fans or… Continue

Happy New Year

I'm trying to work on my bird list database queries to accommodate the new year... what I call my Y2.008K problem, but my head is too fuzzy this morning... so I'm doing this instead.

Finished the second Daniel Abraham novel weeks ago and can highly recommend it - I can't wait for the next two "seasons."

OK, enough goofing off. Back to the code mill.

Daniel Abraham's Novels

Hey yall,

I'm in the middle of the second of Daniel Abraham's The Long Price Quartet and loving it. I learned about this local author right here on DCF. Now fantasy is not usually my preference; I'm more of a hard science fiction guy, but this is tasty and interesting. There are no gnomes or witches. There are innovative concepts, gripping plot lines, a fascinating society, and characters you come to care about.

I recommend you start with "A Shadow in Summer" before foll… Continue

Thanks for thinking of that! I saw the special, noted it was availablable on DVD, checked Netflix, put it on order there, and I see it should arrive in my mail box today! I'll see if there are any extras. I first learned of Glass when I won tickets to see Koyaanisqatsi back in the 1980s. I'm a big fan now of him and Godfrey Regio :)

Hi Bosque Bill - yes, that was me and my (all-black) Smartie! Probably at the framing shop (or the dry cleaners), or just wandering discovering 'new stuff' (we've only been here since very late July 2008). We haven't eaten at Little Anita's yet, good?

Woo hoo! Yet another appreciator of opera. There can't be enough of us, you know. :)

I joined the bird group you wrote about in Burque Birding. I like the idea of "green" birding and then sharing those adventures.

Ahh...the maligned Westside. You can't get the stellar views of the Sandias on the east side, after all. Most of my Albuquerque life has been spend living on the westside. I'm glad we're on the same side of the river.
