I just want to say 4 pieces of negative mail from Richard Romero did not help his case in my eyes. The last thing I want to see when I get home after work is a negative piece of campaign mail about his opponent. And Richard Berry's adamant opposit...

Profile Information

Where I Live:
Nob Hill
About Me:
Fun-loving, nice gay man who moved to the Duke City from southern Wisconsin in Fall 2007. I work in social work--and I really enjoy my life here. Coming from the Midwest--you can see how different life is here--most specifically you can be who you want with little hassle. I think this is a great town--and I challenge any Albuquerque hater to take my burned out factory town tour of the Midwest. I love to garden, read, write, make new friends, dance (club and country western), explore the city, do bead and jewelery work--and I'm working hard on "just be." I'm an avid cigar smoker and may take up a pipe one of these days. I also have a blog and if you'd like to read it just get a hold of me. Viva Burque!
Favorite Thing(s) About Albuquerque:
Central Avenue, hiking in the Sandias, manana, 10 cloudy days a year; roses; rosemary
Relationship Status:
Single
What I'm Reading:
The Other Boleyn Girl; Elizabeth and Mary: Queens, Cousins, Enemies (I think that's right), Mary Queen of Scots; various Henry VIII biographies--do you see a pattern ;-)?
What I'm Listening To:
Daughtry; Queer as Folk soundtrack; Bach; Beethoven; Bach; Chopin; Lifehouse; My Chemical Romance; Fall Out Boy; The Killers

Policing

As part of the Safe City project, an officer with Albuquerque Police Department was at our annual meeting last night. I am glad he came though I thought some of the things he said were disturbing. He said if there were people "shooting up in the laundrymat" to give him a call and he "would clean up and incarcerate them." He said if there were homeless people "loitering, getting drunk, and sleeping in your alley" he would similarly "clean them up." My eyes opened wide. It's not as if I am naive a… Continue

Meet One of the 9 Newest Members of the Nob Hill Neighborhood Association Board of Directors!

I WON!!!!!!!!

Yes, I pulled it off. I am now one of the 9 new members on the Nob Hill Neighborhood Association Board of Directors! I want to extend a big thank you to my neighbor for having vested your confidence and trust in me.

I was first up to the podium. After everyone told me to get on the microphone--which was rather humbling--I got up there and made a self-deprecating joke about how I had the longest biography on the handout of eligible candidates. I got up there with some new ideas--l… Continue

Names

Just to avoid confusion I thought I'd throw up a post about my name. My legal name is Stephen--and in professional environments I go by my legal name. In my personal life, I go by David--my Hebrew name and the name in which I feel most comfortable.

Towards a New Politics in Albuquerque...

After reading yesterday's Albuquerque Journal,I'm done. I'm done with local politics in Albuquerque. Instead of following the Club 7 issue, the newspaper decided to focus on Mayor Chavez. The mayor seized on the opportunity to criticize the bar--in his typical tough guy, law and order manner. It was almost the perfect story as he gears up for his re-election campaign. It seems like this controversy could not have been better crafted for him.

Where was the commentary from the City Council… Continue

Drag Racing on Montgomery

So I live with Montgomery Boulevard as my backyard--literally there's the back of the house, a postage stamp-sized backyard, a wall, sidewalk, berm--and then 6 lanes of Montgomery Boulevard. I live on Drag Race Alley--the stretch between Juan Tabo and Tramway. Other than the rarely changing light at Cairo in front of El Dorado High School--it's a straight shot all the way to Tramway from Juan Tabo.

Drag Race Alley impacts significantly the quality of life for every residential dweller on that s… Continue

I apologize, I am responding to your message from April -- it only took me almost three months. Sorry! Yes, I did my undergrad at Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) and I am completing my Master's thesis on how planner's identity (Chicanas/os) impacts the approach they take in planning with local communities. A little indigenous planning, insurgent planning and some critical race theory!

Well, Nob Hill isn't that far! (Even though I don't get down there as often as I'd like.)

Well, it was fun but maybe not out best. But I, and about 100 others, watched a cop in an SUV slam it in reverse, hit the gas, and crash into a stroller being pushed by a young mother in a crosswalk. Literally tore the stroller out of her hands, must've missed the mom's nose by half an inch. It was horrendous. But the 3 or 4 year old little girl was fine, only a little bruise on her temple. She'll forget about it in 2 days; that mom will be scarred for life! (And that cop is probably going to drink an extra beer or 8 when she gets home.) Cheers, mate.

Hey, did you make it down today? Didn't see you, tried to keep my eyes peeled. If you were there (and probably within 20 feet of me the whole time), did you see the stroller incident? Holy Smokes!

Sure thing, Jeremy--you know there's no rush in email for us. I'm going to enjoy seeing it with you--and will wait until you're in town to go!

Well, I came over that one time, but you said you "didn't want any" and shut the door in my face. Which was confusing, until I realized that I had a vacuum under my arm and was wearing a really cheap suit.

But really, I was just coming home from my performance as Willy Lohman at a Theater in the Parks afternoon program; and I was hoping to borrow a bag for my Kenmore, cuz I know you have a similar model.

Another time, surely.

Hey Davey. How's the dusty, windy, weather-confused Albuquerque spring treating you? Enjoy these mild evenings now, my friend, the enervating summer approacheth...(but it's a dry heat.)
