Ben, I found the third part of your interview with Oran Caton at http://www.qcsunonline.com/common/printer/view.php?db=quaycounty&id=5355. Does the rest of the interview exist online anywhere? - Ronnie Caton

Right on, Kelly! It's sure to be great. I just picked up "The Year of the Flood" the other day and have not a chance to start it. But if it's like Oryx and Crake, it'll be good.

No doubt! No, Cathy, they weren't bowling team members. I don't know who they were. Just some saps tired of getting email. I noticed the first one just before the last bowling event. The next was just a few days ago. Probably went to join Albuqu...

Margaret Atwood

For those who haven't heard, Margaret Atwood is doing a reading at UNM on Monday evening from her new book, "The Year of the Flood," the post-apocalyptic/dystopic sequel (or is the prequel?) to Oryx & Crake. Atwood may be best known for her novel "The Handmaid's Tale." Her stuff is gruesome and creepy and edgy and gets under your skin.

The reading is at 7pm in Woodw… Continue

Using "The Dad Voice" as a Rhetorical Tool: Day 8 as a T.A.

As I've mentioned, I received a Teaching Assistantship from UNM to cover my tuition in the Creative Fiction MFA program there. Calling it an assistantship is not quite right. Unlike other departments, where a professor lectures and a TA administers tests and grades homework, in the English department, TAs are on the front lines, with the first year TAs teaching freshman composition (which we do in exchange for our tuition.) I've been posting updates on the teaching over at the theContinue

What is this plant?

I'm sure there's a forum for this but I'm not sure where. My sister found this camping in the Jemez. Anyone know what it is?

The REAL reason I live in NM

This afternoon I was driving down north 4th and it hit me. The real reason I live in New Mexico.

For several weeks now, at the Walmart on Coors Bypass there's been caution tape around a wall of shopping carts, and off in the corner a propane tank and a blackened metal cage.

But today, there was the aroma of fresh roasted green chile. I'd venture to say that there are few, if any, other locales in the U.S. that have a comparable aroma announcing a season. You don't smell the leaves turning red… Continue

I was trying to get into the MFA program the first year they offered it (they only took two non-MA students then...) and was advised to already be in some grad fiction classes. I took one with Sean, who lives in Taos. Very unusual person, very helpful.

Hey Dick,

Just caught up with these posts and saw you got into the UNM MFA program -- congratulations. If you get a chance to take a course with Sean Murphy, I'd recommend it highly.

best,
Noel

Thanks for the welcome, and the map. My house is right off of Lead, so I have a bike lane all the way to work and back. Pretty excited!!! (and also a little wary, but I guess that's good.)

Hello, and pardon the lapse. I didn't see this until this morning.

I worked for a stairparts distributer (newels, balasters, fittings, mouldings) as a warehouseman/receiving and returns clerk until a layoff diverted fortunes and led my wife and me here. much as I enjoyed my job and the great people with whom I worked, it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all to try something new, so I'm exploring opportunities. Would be nice to make a living blogging, but I'm betting a few ex-newspaper journalists would dispute that.

Not sure what my DSM-IV profile would be as regards my employability, but a call to my last employer might elicit a stutter or two at the mention of my name.

Portland's unemployment rate has now exceeded 12%, so I have one more reason among many to be happy to be 'mongst ye.

What do you do, Dick? If I may ask?

I haven't read a ton of Didion, but by the looks of it "STB" is one of her earliest collections, 1968. It's non-fiction, though. "Run, River" (fiction) was published in '63. I can only vouch for STB, Play it as it Lays, and the White Album, which are all awesome. Good luck this semester!
