Worms Bedding Under the Sink, Poo Smell In The Air

Dear Readers, Apologies for the lack of a summer post. But I still am trying to figure out the key to successful summer vegetable gardening on a super hot deck in downtown Albuquerque subject to high valley temperatures (I am maybe 3/4 of a mile from the river and valley bottom). This, in addition to *very* significant downtown…See More

Thank God for Spring!

I left New Mexico for a few days on Feb. 1: the exact day the brutal, 50-year cold front began its move into the state. While my absence was beautiful for more reasons than I can count or even remember, it did result in at least one casualty: the rooftop garden.

My attempt to raise…

What You Need to Know About Fiery Foods

If you live and die by fire, skip this. But if you live in Albuquerque and have not been to the National Fiery Foods and BBQ Show, which hits Sandia resort this weekend, I have one syllable of advice for you: GO.

A few tips from a…

Men Who Stare At Goat Poop

My efforts to grow a year-round, organic vegetable garden on a fourth floor deck downtown continue -- aided at various points by curiosity, an apparent inclination toward tinkering and more than a handful of goat poop.

An Unexpected Microclimate

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 7:30am 6 Comments

Last summer, I moved from a home with a yard to a new development downtown, downsizing and simplifying my life, intentionally shrinking my mortgage and my carbon footprint.

I no longer have to do yard work, and my one block walk may be the world's shortest commute.

I also now garden up in the sky, taking advantage of my new decks and what appears to be their own microclimates for growing vegetables: somewhat… Continue
