Iridium Saxophone QuartetWhile the saxophone might be most often associated with 1920's era swing-bands and mid-20th century jazz icons, there is also a wealth of great "classical" music composed for the instrument, including concertos, recital pieces and ensemble pieces. The Sax Quartet in particular has gained popularity in recent decades as a fertile medium for musical expression, and this week, the Iridium Saxophone Quartet will treat Chatter audiences to a concert featuring compositions by…See More

Brahms and SalonenEsa-Pekka Salonen is one of a handful of internationally respected artists to be widely respected as both a composer and a conductor at a world-class level.  Continuing this long-standing practice (Jean Baptiste-Lully was perhaps the first famous composer/conductor, and global super-stars like Pierre Boulez and John Adams keep the tradition alive today), Salonen is credited with significantly increasing the international stature and reputation of the Los Angeles Philharmonic…See More

Mahler Symphony No. 4—an epic re-sized for chamber orchestraChatter takes Mahler's smallest symphony and shrinks it even more. While nothing about this symphony is anything less than epic, it is still one of Mahler's shortest symphonies (clocking-in at just under an hour, depending on the performance), and is one of the most lightly-scored (no trombones or tuba).  The work is also his most "classical" symphony as far as form, and perhaps texture and counterpoint as well. Taking this relative…See More

Felberg and Becktell  Violin and Cello   Bach and BrahmsFor Easter Sunday, we play of course, Bach, this time the Violin Partita in B minor.  Each one of the 4 movements, is followed by a "double", which is a virtuosic variation of it's preceding movement.  In this special performance, David will play the main movements, and Joel will play the doubles on a five-string cello, adding new color and interest to this glorious work. In the late 19th and early 20th century, it was not unusual to…See More

Church of Beethoven does Brandenburg backwards

Posted on December 4, 2009 at 2:56pm 0 Comments

Last Sunday the Church of Beethoven had a packed house for the first in a series of performances of the six Brandenburg concertos. OK, so they didn’t actually play the notes in reverse order, but although it was the first in the series, they performed Concerto No. 6.

The next Brandenburg in the Church of Beethoven series will be No. 5 performed December 27, with the rest… Continue

Have you seen this surfboard? Church of Beethoven sign has gone missing.

Posted on August 15, 2009 at 12:09pm 4 Comments

The Church of Beethoven’s surfboard has disappeared. If you’ve attended one of the Sunday morning concerts, either at the Filling Station on 4th or at the C of B’s new home at the Factory on 5th, you’ve seen it—the yellow surfboard with Beethoven painted on it.

But now it’s been stolen. Felix Wurman, Church of… Continue
