I was looking into locally built coops as well, and an employee at Farmer's Feed & Supply Store told me that they build "sturdy" 5x4' coops for $300. He said that the price is subject to change in the spring. I'm converting a doghouse for mine, s...

The South Valley is a huge place, with good neighborhoods and bad. Don't let the casual paranoia scare you off from investigating it and seeing if there's a place that suits your needs.

Forgotten Albuquerque: Santiago/Ghufoor Pueblo

Dennis Herrick, a slight, active man in his 60s, stands on the ridge of a sand hill and gestures down over a low wall toward a strangely empty lot in one of Bernalillo’s largest subdivisions. “So, there, probably where that cul-de-sac is, that was the plaza,” he says, with the co… Continue

Tiguex

An early map shows the "province" of Tiguex in an unlikely location.

By the time Europeans had begun colonizing the Americas in earnest, the middle Rio Grande valley had been inhabited for over 10,000 years. In that time, many peoples had left their mark there, from the… Continue

Photo Thursday- Cobb at the Petroglyphs

(Crossposted from Forgotten Albuquerque)

Wow, here's a coincidence. Exactly 116 years ago today, the man in this photograph bundled up his infant child and trundled out to the West Mesa. You can just make out the buggy that they traveled in over on the right edge. I didn't realize that this was an anniversary until after I dug the photo out of my archives.… Continue

The Sacred Past- The Petroglyphs

(Crossposted from Forgotten Albuquerque)

What a strange city this is. On the fringes of the far West Side, the housing developments march faceless and souless, one clone-home subdivision after another rising starkly out of the concrete covered desert. All context of place is strangely absent here, t… Continue

Las Posadas

(cross posted from Forgotten Albuquerque

In name, at least, this blog is about “forgotten” things. The idea is that, on some level, all history is forgotten the moment the last person with memory of it dies. Therefore, those of us who find ourselves looking backwards are constantly trying to reconstruct experiences we’ve never had, poring over tattered documents and fading pictures, trying to put ourselves into moments forever sealed off from us. T… Continue

Hey, Ty, it's Nancy T. here, and that is (of course) from a postcard. It's called the "Lungers' " Coat of Arms, and besides the skull, it features a couple of eggs (on the left), a glass (of milk?, on the right), and an object labeled "escupideras" at the bottom (that's Spanish for spittoon or chamber pot). It's the only card like this I've ever seen. I got it on eBay.

Was reading your blog and wanted you to know I've made some really great connections with some old timers in my Los Griegos neighborhood. I'll be posting about the original church in the very near future.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday with your new son!
