"Used to be the day when you could buy freshly roasted green chiles at that massive grocery (central market ??) near 38th street in austin. That was only around late august/sept though. When you are living in the wilderness you gotta plan man, plan."

Oh Sweet 505

All right. In 3 days we hit the Albuquerque city limits for a show with AMP Concerts at The Source. I'll be opening for one of my favorite songwriters on the planet, Susan Gibson. It's going to be fun. You should come.MORE IMPORTANTLY...I am trying to plan out my chile fixes...maybe perhaps if I could just get it injected in two alternating streams of red/green/red/green...that might serve me best. But I don't think…See More

"I think that Peter Carey collection is possibly the best book of short stories I have ever read. Though the Jumpa Lahiri collection "Interpreter of Maladies" is pretty close."

Adventures of the Merch Girl: Hurricane Parties

Posted on September 13, 2008 at 4:39pm 2 Comments

So...being a New Mexican means the worst I've had to deal with natural disaster-wise is knowing that ditches are deadly (STAY AWAY!) and that dust gets caught in your throat sometimes when it's windy. When the news reports said Hurricane Ike was going to dump a bunch of rain and blow us all around a lot here in Austin, I didn't know what to do. So instead of buying bottled water and granola bars, my buddy Katie and I decided to have a hurricane party. We bought diet Coke and hummus and decided… Continue

Kids, maybe I just have not found the right place in Austin, but I don't think a good sopaipilla exists there. Hence, when I come to Albuquerque, I have to have a sopaipilla and honey fix from Los Cuates. I like sopaipillas as big as your head.

For those not yet initiated (i.e. my Texan friends), they're basically fried dough, put in oil so hot it causes the dough to puff when cooking (we sometimes call them "sofa pillows" because of… Continue

A short trip home.

A long weekend in Albuquerque made for a good Memorial Day celebration, especially since I am back in Austin and it it in the high 90's and humid. Meh. One thing I never took much advantage of as a kid was the proximity of the Sandia Mountains and their foothills to my house. A five minute drive will put you at the base of the foothills, complete with many a trail and cacti to run into. (Ouch).…
