My girls do the same thing, on and off through out the day... and I always presumed it was the singing of the Cackleberry Song....the exuberance they express when an egg has been laid. This is prime egg-laying time for most of them, too.
I agree with Joran... that is what I do, too. I have had little problems with chickens bleeding. Another thing, I clip only one wing. They learn quickly that flying in circles is not fun! I have to clip mine about two or three times a year.
