I have only 4 chooks so not lots of manure. But I am curious about how you use it. Fertilizer? Does have to be treated or processed in some way before applying it? Thanks.
My girls do the same thing but we havent had trouble with broken shells by laying on bare wood. I saw the comment about wood chips. That's worth a try. Dan's Boots and Saddles on 4th has the good kind of wood chips (not cedar). Good luck.
What quantity of eggs are you looking for? I have free range chickens and would be happy to sell you some fresh eggs (eggs are light brown, medium brown, and green). I am in the Nob Hill area.
I sell my eggs to my coworkers and I always have to tell them not to use them as hardboiled unless they let them age in the fridge for a couple of weeks. The membranes of store eggs dry and shrink back, making them easier to peel. The fresh ones jus…
My understanding is that if you want to hard boil eggs from backyard chickens, you have to let them sit in the fridge for a couple weeks. Keep in mind when you buy eggs from the supermarket, they are quite old, possibly even a couple months old. Fre…
I have 4 chickens (1 Plymouth Rock, 1 Ameracauna, 2 Australorpes) laying an egg a day. All 4 lay eggs with very dense membranes. It makes peeling hard boiled eggs challenging. Even cracking an egg over a frying pan requires a very firm attack. Is it…
I generally don't wash my eggs until it is time to use them. Then I just wash them vigorously with water. I sortof scrub them with my hands. I think if they are dirty, a rinse with water before you use them is good because some of that dirt could ge…
I have 4 pullets sharing 2 nesting boxes (although they usually all lay in one box -- go figure). All 4 of them are laying an egg a day right now. I generally collect eggs once a day. Once in awhile an egg will be dirty. What's the best way to clean…
I was told by an experienced chicken hand that if the saddle feathers are straight and pointed it's a roo; if they are rounded and curved, it's a pullet. I was convinced one of my chicks was a roo (she was and is tall and rangy) but the experienced…
Good luck placing your roo's. I have 2 as well I'm trying to find homes for ... a beautiful black Australorp and a shy Americaunus. So if you have any left over takers for your roo's, please send them my way. Karen
I am assuming these are chickens? If so, perhaps you should post this here. There's a recent "need home for roo" post that has received 5 replies. Good luck!
Looking for good homes for 5-month old Australorpe and 4-month old Americanus. I was told they were pullets when I bought them but ... If you can take either, please let me know.
Thanks, Karen
