Profile Information

About Me:
The light, culture and climate of The Land of Enchantment drew Kelly to New Mexico for college at St. John's in Santa Fe. Prepared to do everything and nothing with her liberal arts degree, she settled into the nonprofit world, earned an MBA and bounced between Tucson, Minneapolis and Phoenix before she convinced her born and bred Midwestern husband that Albuquerque was the place to buy a house, adopt a few dogs and set down roots.

She's now a jack of all trades writer, concentrating on the arts, food and lifestyle stories as a regular contributor to several local publications including Albuquerque Arts Magazine, Localflavor Magazine and the New Mexico Business Weekly. And she writes a mean press release, a good newsletter and great ghostwritten articles for her corporate clients.

Full disclosure: I'm on the board of Creative Albuquerque. I love the arts and creativity in all their diversity.
Favorite Thing(s) About Albuquerque:
weather, sunshine, laissez-faire attitude

Get Your Nominations In Now! The rebooted Creative Bravos are back in 2011

Posted on December 8, 2010 at 7:30am 4 Comments

Many of you may remember the Arts Alliance and its signature event the Bravos Awards. For 25 years, the Bravos recognized noteworthy achievement in several arts and arts related categories - theater, dance, visual arts, etc. The Bravos were among Albuquerque’s most exciting and anticipated annual events, too. After two years of organizational self-reflection, the Arts Alliance became Creative Albuquerque in January of this year. The annual Bravos awards… Continue

Mentor & Apprentices Show Examines Teaching/Learning Process

Posted on August 5, 2009 at 12:00pm 0 Comments

Here's how I'm spending my Friday night. My friend and tapestry artist Donna Loraine Contractor (second from right) and past and present apprentices will be showing the fruits of their teacher/student relationship at a show titled “Mentor and Apprentices.” The opening reception is tonight from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Contractor’s program is unique among teacher/student arrangements, because rather than lecture her apprentices, she points… Continue

The Velocity of Gary (Not His Real Name) Review

Posted on March 1, 2009 at 1:56pm 1 Comment

Because I won the tickets to see The Velocity of Gary (Not His Real Name), I promised to write a review of the play. Here it is.

Chad Brummett is a dynamic local actor whose ability to create characters with movement, voices and subtle changes in expression make him mesmerizing to watch. Especially when you’re sitting in the front row of The Velocity of Gary (Not His… Continue

Keep in Touch with ABQ Arts with State of the Arts newsletter

Posted on February 16, 2009 at 11:31am 0 Comments

As part of the mission of the Arts Alliance to be a provider of information about the arts and culture industry in Albuquerque, the organization started a twice monthly enewsletter called State of the Arts. It's put together by yours truly, and it's gotten good feedback. There are always several local stories, as well as trends about the art and culture industries regionally and nationally.

You, too, can… Continue

UPDATE! Call to Action: We know budgets need to be cut, but this is ridiculous

Posted on January 26, 2009 at 8:30am 22 Comments

In one of the many enewsletters I get came this disturbing piece of news for anyone who cares about the arts community: The House Appropriations and Finance Committee will meet Wednesday, January 28 at 1:30 p.m. to vote on the budget proposals submitted by the State of New Mexico's Legislative Finance Committee and the Executive Branch. The LFC recommends reducing New Mexico Arts budget by $400,000 and the… Continue
