"I thought about putting artificial light to extend their laying. But I decided that since they just started laying, and they are still pretty much babies, that I would let nature take it's course. I don't want to force them, I got them so…"

"Sounds like they are right on schedule. They may get a little erratic in their laying schedule. The change in the amount of daylight can make them slow down. My Rhode Island Reds kept laying big brown eggs daily but my Americanas were almost…"

"This is my 1st year. We moved down from Minnesota and I was THRILLED to find out I could have chickens! My Rhode Island red 'Sassy' is the only one not so friendly. But the barred rocks follow me like dogs! They have just begun to lay."

"I agree. They will keep warm on their own. If you heat them and the power goes out they might freeze. My perch is protected from the wind and rain/snow but stil plenty of ventilation for fresh air. The electricity I do use is for the heated metal…"

"ok, thank you! The book I researched said they needed to be kept dry and warm. After the downpour incident, I guess I've wondered if they were smart enough to seek shelter if needed! I will go out today and put the coop roof over the area they…"

This last month when we got all the heavy rain, I had to go out and put them in their houses, because they were just standing there in the downpour! So, do you think they will be smart enough to use their houses this winter?See More
