I think everyone has a favorite story about THOSE kind of brownies. My favorite remembrance of Fred's is someone saying, "I don't know why I bother to get dressed to eat there when the people who work there wear their pajamas to work." Or somethin...

Oh, Tully's doesn't have cannoli, but the Italian sweet shop next door (Sartori's?) does. Shells, filled to order. Get a Cabernet Italian ice while you're there, too.

mmmmmmm...T'N'T Deli had the tomato saucey cheesesteaks like Pennsylvania has. Certainly a long shot off the PA consistency, but the only place I found here that tired to make them.

I remember when, episode 2

When I last wrote about my early days in the Duke City I let you all know that I found my journals in my attic and came across a “review” of the now defunct restaurant, Adam’s Table. If you care not to follow… Continue

They are all reasons to be... a concert review in tangentia

It occurred to me yesterday, as I read my favorite degenerate sports fan/sportswriter's column, that this week is the nexus of All Things Great, and for so many people.

To wit: we successfu… Continue

Local Etsy Seller: NUEVOMEXCELENTE

There are quite a few benefits to one’s wife having a subscription to BUST magazine. Among these are music and film reviews. It was by virtue of the hallowed pages of that fine “Ladies” magazine that I was able to turn my friends… Continue

Escaping the Miasma

Miasma: mi⋅as⋅ma – noun, plural -mas, -ma⋅ta. 1. Noxious exhalations from putrescent organic matter; poisonous effluvia or germs polluting the atmosphere.

We decided on late Friday or early Saturday that this past weekend was the one to escape the city, with its polluted air full of St… Continue

Mass - I hear you about the Pulitzer Prize- style in-depth reporting. We purchased a year's subscription to the Journal and we won't be renewing it in January. And I hardly ever watch the local news on the TV. I search a few sites on the web and watch CNBC or the Nightly Bus Report most days to get my news.

On another note, I checked the AL East standings and was horrified to see that the Yankees are in first place. As always those (you know whats) cruise along through the season and some how steal the title in the end. I think you need to call Fenway and put some fire under that other team's butt!!!! (this advice is from a former AL, 30+year long, Oakland A's fan who just finally gave up on that team but understands the AL's pain with the Yankees)

Hello....since you seem to be such a wealth of information about the neighborhood, etc...I'm wondering, can you recommend anyone to do some yardwork? I need some weeds mowed, some weeds pulled, I need all the junk hauled away, and I don't have a mower. Any ideas?

Gracias!

CHS Class of 79. (Yikes that is a long ago year.) My Mom and sister and her family still live in our old house. (Dalton Rd. ) Mom is a retired elementary school teacher (Westlands).

Small world, eh? I've been here since 94 by way of Southern Cal.

Mass thanks for the feedback on my HP post. You know, coming from the east coast, that it's always safer looking professional when you attend job fairs, etc. And I worked for two Boston based tech firms in my past and learned quickly not to look too much like a casual Californian.

The good news? I made it to round two. Of course, there are hundreds of us for a few sales jobs but we'll see how it goes. I should have my first interview in a couple of weeks.

And I am catching up on my emails and other things like the Fix. I should be more active soon!!!! And it feels good. Grandma's house is fixed up and I'm starting to feel like a local New Mexican! (Had my first meal at Kelly's on Central today with my friend's son and had fun sitting outside before this wind storm kicked up)

The next step, after Consumer Reports, for you is AngiesList. If you ever decide to buy into that, you have to work it for us. :-)
