Hi Merimee - I'm bouncing between DC and NM this academic term, as usual. Truth and Beauty, and Autobiography of a Face rank high on my book list - enjoyed them both very much, and have reread T&B to see how it is put together.

 

I'll have to wait until summer before I can get going on the poetry here in NM. Thanks so much for the suggestions.

Ha - I WISH I were at UNMN, life would be so much simpler! Actually, I'm at a small liberal arts college in Washington DC (Gallaudet University) and I keep busy commuting between NM and DC.

Poetry workshops? Hmmm. Very intriguing. I've been writing poetry for years, but have never dared to show my stuff anywhere. I did have a piece published in the local newspaper when I was about 12... One of these days I may muster up the courage to try a new genre. That's what happened with blogging - I started writing for a blog in DC, and got some good discussions going, then sent something to DCF and so it goes.

Thanks for the tips on reading material. I'm always looking for good stuff to read on the airplane, and will check these out. As far as poets go, I've long been in love with Mary Oliver's work. Louise Gluck, Opal Palmer Adisa, Lucille Clifton, and Nicki Finney are also poets who inspire me.

Grin - no, you are not being too literal as a reader! I have two homes - my adobe casita in Barelas, which really *is* home, and my apartment at the college campus where I work as a philosophy prof. It is a self-contained apartment located in what this year has become the freshman dormitory! I'm having a blast!

When I was in college, my folks could not afford to send me away, so I lived at home and went to community college. I like to think that I'm now making up for missing out on residential college life.

I would have loved to meet you at Jon's gathering. I'm actually a bit shy in groups of strangers, and although poets are my heroes, their brilliance and insight can be intimidating.

I haven't spent a lot of time on here lately, but it is a great way to promote and find local stuff of every stripe. I think there is a place where you can sell things...thanks for reminding me, since I'm having a garage sale on Sept. 26....lots of cool stuff...furniture, clothes, books, bedding, shoes (some brand new) luggage....still just a drop in the bucket of the things I want to offload but a start to a less cluttered domicile.

She and Mary Oishi and I read down at the Harwood on the night of the 5th. There were four people in the audience, all family members!!!
