Profile Information

Where I Live:
North Valley
About Me:
Happily retired and enjoying learning about and doing those things I've never been able to do before. Avid reader, hobbiest beekeeper, private pilot, Master Gardener, motorcyclist, stoneware potter and presently learning how to sculpt and draw. People and friends are the important things in life.
Favorite Thing(s) About Albuquerque:
climate and long-time friends, the wonderful warmth of the tri-cultures
Relationship Status:
Married
What I'm Reading:
Usually two or three going at a time, mysteries, sci-fi, action adventure and texts on whatever I'm learning about right now, bees, potting, sculpting, etc. I've joined a couple of online book clubs to broaden my exposure to good books.
What I'm Listening To:
Very eclectic, I like almost everything except Gangsta Rap. Probably listen to classic rock and country the most.
I took up pottery after I retired, just for fun. Here's some examples. I'm working on learning to sculpt and draw now.

Introducing Tim O'Leary

OK, so he is just a dog and a rescue dog on top of that, which is kinda the point here. One of my wonderful companions of many years finally passed on last month. Paca, (yep, she was a rescue dog too and carried the acronym for People's Anti-Cruelty Association as her name), had been… Continue

First "Cut-Out"

I participated in my first “cut-out” this weekend. A “cut-out” is beek slang for removing a colony of bees that have taken up housekeeping in an unwanted location, as in this case, the ceiling of someone’s front porch. Honeybees need dark and dry places to build a nest and make a new… Continue

CLEANING ACEQUIAS

One of the rites of spring in the agricultural valley areas of Albuquerque has always been cleaning the acequias. This is a seasonal task I have been performing for over 50 years, beginning with helping my grandfather when I was barely big enough to carry a rake or a shovel.… Continue

Hi Beek,
You mentioned that you live in the part of time where we started the motorcycle ride yesterday. That's my part of town, too. Where do you live? I'm on 8th St.

Hi! Thanks for the welcome! Actually, BF and I are a part of AMRG, we just haven't had the opportunity to join in on a ride yet. So much riding to do; So little time! On AMRG, our username is gemidevi.

Thanks for the support and comments! I truly appreciate it.

Sorry not to have gotten back sooner, NM. I will call you tomorrow. My own number is 839 2467. I'm writing on Tuesday night.

What other issues do you see? I'm certain that the swarm constitutes a potential danger here. Last summer a friend was stung twice. Are you wondering if they are, in fact, bees?

The elevation of the area where they swarm is only on the first floor of my one floor house, and it is right out front.

At any rate, I appreciate your return message, and I will happily call tomorrow. I'm a teacher, and I just started summer vacation, so I'm here most of the time. Bill

Looks like you may be the guy to talk to.......I had a swarm at my house this weekend and they settled into what looks like small drain pipe on the side of the apartment complex next door. It's about 20 feet from my front door and they are very active during the late morning. I'd love to get your input on what they are doing over there......

Hello: Thought you may be of some assistance! My family and I have two massive bee hives in our back yard! HUGE...... of course they are unwanted as we have pets..... but do not wish to harm the bees via exterminator... Do you know of anyone who may be of assistance? Thanks so much!

I'm interested. Last year I apprenticed with a biodynamic CSA farm in the South Valley, and this year I may take Les Crowder's course in topbar beekeeping. I'm in New Jersey now, but coming back to Albuquerque next week. Unfortunately, I'm both landless and homeless, so my biggest immediate challenge is to find a place for myself! (before i can provide one for bees... :-)
