What I'm Reading:
Giraffe, by J. M. Ledgard
A herd of giraffes is transported to Czechoslovakia in the 1970's. Apparently based on a true story of the largest captive giraffe herd ever. The flap copy leads me to believe the giraffes are all going to meet a terrible fate.
Although the writer is Scottish, reading this book reminds me of reading Milan Kundera, in a good way, and makes me wonder if gloomy yet hopeful reflections on the details of life behind the Iron Curtain were a product of Soviet Communism, or just the minds of writers living in overcast Central/Eastern European climates.
What I'm Listening To:
The squabbling of my out-of-school children

St. Michael

Etching

Part of a new series of etchings portraying archangels. All four will be part of Contemporary Realism in Printmaking, the next show at New Grounds Print Workshop & Gallery. The opening is Friday, June 5th, 5:00-8:00, with a 6:30 etching demonstration by yours truly.

Oh I'm a librarian and I'm OK
I read all night and I shelve all day

I catalog books, I eat my lunch, I manage the library
on Wednesdays I pick up the kids and they are loud in the car near me.

I'm a librarian and I'm OK
I read all night and I shelve all day

I order books, I skip and jump
I make art to sell in foreign lands
I annoy students by playing obscure punk bands

I'm a librarian and I'm OK
I read all night and I shelve all day

I surf the net, I shelve more books
I observe the students work their wiles
I wish I had a charming accent ( a crossbow wielding pupil?)
Just like Rupert Giles

Don't be afraid of basic art tools, Ray. There's really no reason.

I am a member of the council
Of the naval mutiny
I'm no traitor to my conscience
Having done my sworn duty.

These are my last words
Before the scaffold
And I charge you all to hear
How a wretched British sailor
Becaue a citizen mutineer

Pressed into service
To carry powder
I was loyal to the crack of the whip
If I starved on the streets of Bristol
I'd starve worse on a British ship
