! Calling All Artists! Make a Cradle !

Profile Information

Where I Live:
About Me:
The Cradle Project is a fundraising art installation designed to represent the plight of the estimated 48 million children who have been orphaned by disease and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.

Our Mission is to promote awareness and raise financial support to help feed, shelter, and educate these children.

The Cradle Project’s vision is to utilize the symbolism of empty cradles and falling sand to represent the lost potential of these orphaned children. Our goal is to amass a minimum of 1,000 cradles, all made out of scrap material. We believe that if we can see enough potential in a piece of scrap to make a structure which cradles a child, why can we not see that much potential in our world’s forgotten children. Empty cradles speak for themselves. Juxtaposed to these cradles will be a wall of slowly falling sand, symbolizing how these lives, these cradles, this potential, will all be buried and never realized.

Did you know that The Cradle Project is still looking for cradles? It's true!

If you want to participate, but feel overwhelmed by the process, join other creatives this weekend for a Cradle Making Marathon! You need not be an artist to participate, though artists are strongly encouraged to come. Just bring some funky found/reused/recycled materials and your enthusiasm (kids love this project too!), and your cradle will spring to life… Continue

So much left to do!

The Cradle Project began organizing in Albuquerque in September of 2006. Ever since that beginning a year and a half ago, we volunteer organizers have witnessed tremendous support from the local community! And we feel so fortunate to understand first hand the power and enthusiasm of this community. Thank you!

As a means toward building publicity, raising operating funds, connecting with potential artists, and educating our neighbors about the… Continue

Will, Please do come to our opening on June 7th. This is actually our ONE main exhibit. Although we have installed previews around Albuquerque and Santa Fe during the past year, this one is what everything has been building up to. At present, I don't imagine there will be another.

I didn't notice the April 30th submission deadline. I guess I'll have to make one for the next exhibit.
Check out my website.
I show a few sculptures there - I can imagine making a cradle with the same sort of materials and style as the sculptures shown.
Good luck with your exhibit. I will try to stop by to see it.

hey there -- I'm not artistic in any way, but I do have a hand-me-down crib that I'd love to donate if anyone needs it. (for art or for actual sleeping.)
