Whitney Buchanan replied to Tandi Hufnagel's discussion Muscovy Duck keepers? in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"I don't think you want a kiddie pool, they will foul that in very short order and you will be dumping it out and refilling it daily if you want to avoid turning the kiddie pool into a cesspool. At least with a pond there is an opportunity to…"

Whitney Buchanan replied to JB Blair's discussion Coyotes got my girls!!! A dozen dead!! in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"The only real solution is a lot of rolls of sheep fence wire, vertically to ground level and then horizontally along the ground and secured to the bottom of your fence so they can't scoot under."

Whitney Buchanan replied to JB Blair's discussion Coyotes got my girls!!! A dozen dead!! in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"They are abundant in the South Valley this year as well; very hard to keep them fenced out. My Cane Corso discourages them from scooting under the fence."

Whitney Buchanan replied to C.C.'s discussion adding new chickens to flock in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"People are usually trying to give roosters away on this list, I bet somebody will loan you one and cross their fingers that you'll keep it. ;)"

Whitney Buchanan replied to C.C.'s discussion adding new chickens to flock in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"You could always borrow a rooster for a month and let one of the hens raise some chicks, that's one way to a) keep the peace and b) minimize the exposure to parasites and diseases that new birds may arrive with."

Whitney Buchanan replied to Michael Mull's discussion Organic feed V.S. Non-Organic feed in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers

Whitney Buchanan replied to Binders's discussion Where to get chicks? in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"Any of the feed stores in the North and South Valley, also, you can get them by mail from Murray McMurray. They ship to your local post office and you pick them up there, huge selection."

Whitney Buchanan replied to PCM's discussion destructive chickens in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"The Alameda Greenhouse nursery (4th & Alameda?) carries a bunch of different types of grass seed for pastures, they will definitely be able to steer you to the right one."

Whitney Buchanan replied to PCM's discussion destructive chickens in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"They love to scratch and dig, not just for the greens and roots but for bugs. This may sound odd, but they are just as happy scratching and digging in a pile of damp, decomposing leaves as they are in a planting. If that's not workable,…"

Whitney Buchanan replied to miss america's discussion Stolen Chickens - Sandia Park in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"There is a monthly poultry swap at the feed store in Edgewood but I'm pretty sure it's not happening in the winter months. They might know something; seems like they might have a bulletin board where info might be posted or requests for…"

Whitney Buchanan replied to Christy P's discussion Mean Girls Syndrome Cont.. in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"You merely establish yourself at the top of the "pecking order"; they'll still peck all others lower on that order. No need for lights, just let them have a dark winter."

Whitney Buchanan replied to Gayle Wise's discussion Traumatized Chickens in the group ABQ Chicken Keepers
"Hens slow down in the winter, they aren't traumatized by what happened a month ago. I'd feed lay crumble, hen scratch, and make oyster shell and grit available - period - and see if they start getting back to normal digestion."
