I wnt to froteir with my new husband this morning. We had one of those cinnamon rolls. May I say, it was one of the worst cinnamon rolls I have ever had in my life. 1. it had no GOOD taste. 2. it did NOT have enough cinnamon. 3. It had no nuts. 4....

- Hey Zoe, here's one falafel recipe made with Seitan if you like that and its baked:

The Seitan ones tasted different because they weren't made with chick peas. I did the Seitan ones because of the gas problems with the chick peas. So hope you give these a try.

- Zoe Oddly we also have egrets and herons. I am sure someone here could post a picture of them sitting on cows in the fields. Sounds like you have had your hands full with your visit back to your parents home.
I just finished crocheting a pot holder and felting it in the washing machine. Just getting used to the process and which size needle and stitch will give the desired look. I am working my way up to hats and bedroom slippers. Those are trickier to have them come out after felting to actually fit. Working on a tote called The larger than life bag( google image for many many pictures) Wool sweaters are very difficult to find here even in thrift stores, but I have read some stuff about making felt that way. Its a very cool idea, to make felt from something someone else got rid of and is now being recycled into a new item.

just wanted to tell you that northern NM is where the most intense textile/sheep/weaving/knitting stuff goes on. Its like the holy land for that sort of activity, only to be rivaled by New England.
Tell your husband, that he wont have any shortage of wild life out here. As a matter of fact sometimes its a little too wild, if you know what I mean. Like the article I read that said Jaguars had been seen on the NM/Mexico border, and once I read that one had made it all the way up to the northern part of the state. I watch road runners daily, and cranes when they are here, and of course wild geese of many varieties , but to tell you the truth, those geese(as wonderful as they are) play second fiddle to the sandhill crane
When are you guys moving out here? What part of NM have you decided on?

- Zoe I am sorry I have not one bit of information about the felting/roving thing. If I were you, I would go ahead and post the question, either on the craft or the knitting club. I think the knitting club might give you more success........as far as getting an answer. When I lived in W VA I would buy raw wool and wash and card and weave. But I have been out of that circle for many a year.....,heck I am just starting back with my crochet and having a blast with it. I think there are knitting/weaving felting groups around ABQ that might be more active than the DCF groups, and where your or my questions might have a chance of being answered......but again I dont know about them, just heard talk. If you were to google felt and albuquerque or knitting and Abq you might get some good places. But what am I thinking girl. You are in Va. Near Williamsburg ! There are probably thousands of people doing this stuff and many wonderful shops selling and giving workshops etc. I posted the question you saw...no answer, in the meantime I moved on to my crochet so I forgot all about it.
I do want to "buy" some wool felt...key word being buy not make, to design and sew up some baby shoes.
I would love to find a crochet group, but no luck with that either. The idea of a group of people(men and/or women) meeting weekly to crochet(or knit) and chatting, helping each other if someone gets stuck, sharing information about patterns and yarn etc.....and of course, drinking coffee and tea and eating yummy pastries really appeals to me. As far as my getting the wool felt, I will have to order online. We have horrible fabric stores and only 1 yarn shop, thats very expensive. Google! That is how I answer 90% of my questions about anything and every thing. It will have to do until I find( or create) my perfect crochet group.
You guys are going to love those cranes. Google sandhill cranes, and click on images instead of web, and see how majestic they are. They are extremely tall. You know, I love living some place where the robins and cranes come for the winter , instead of the places they leave. Just follow the advise of the birds

Oh one more idea. Go over to amazon and the book section, and see if you can find a book on kids and felting. If they have one, at least you know its possible. Plus you can get such inexpensive used books there. Why I just ordered 2 this morning that were 1 cent each!

- Zoe Green? What's that? Just kidding. Lets see. I know lots of people from back east or N.W. talk about that, and I do get hit with a kind of pang once in a while, that would only be soothed by Virginia countryside, but I dont think its about the green, specifically, just sights sounds feel and smell of it, which of course includes the green. I love the dry brown desert and the sense of soaring space and the unreal blue sky's out here. I toyed with the idea of going back on a short trip to revisit old haunts and drive the Skyline drive in the autumn. Still in planning stages.
Oh my goodness, those Poitou's are so cute and amazing, especially when they are grown, their head's are just huge.
DD is a good basic book to own, but may I suggest one that's a bit more poetic. "The Wisdom of Donkeys, Finding Tranquility in a Chaotic World" by Andy Merrifield.
I met Amory once and had a brief chat with him. I knew he wrote a cat book, but did not know about the donkey book.
Are you a fiber artist or knitter?
I remember my research days before moving here from Atlanta. Like you always with my head in a book dreaming about NM. It was an exciting time. That was 15 yrs ago.

yes, donkeys. we are complete neophytes but are definitely intrigued. So I have been reading The Definitive Donkey and Making Burros Fly: Cleveland Amory .... we visited with this handsome fellow at a fiber farm on a recent visit to Massachusetts.
I think he is a french Poitou - big fellow with large shaggy head. he won our hearts immediately so I can't even imagine how much you must miss your animals.
"hours at the library" - another common activity. I love our local libraries in both my town and two others. Lately Interlibrary loan has been a great source of materials on alternative building and all things southwest. of course, my other favorite library is Barnes and Nobles. a large stack of magazines & a cup of coffee and the afternoon disappears!

- Hey Zoe You sure got us going with those cinnamon rolls! Yes I agree with Adelita on the Frontier. Its a favorite with my family and everyone that comes here to visit. I have even picked up people from the airport, and the first words out of their mouth.......please, please take us to the Frontier. Thats before they have even gotten in the car.
My roots are around Charlottesville, but I lived on a hippy commune near Front Royal. Va. is a beautiful state. I am embarrassed to say I have never been to Williamsburg!
We also seem to share another love. Donkey's I had two donkey's Skeeter and Misha for 13 yrs. I had to find them a new home last year due to health problems that made it too difficult for me to care for them. It still breaks my heart to think about it.
There are donkey rescue's in NM if and when you get serious.
