"Huh! I happened to stop in for breakfast this morning, and saw that they had red and silver balloons strung in an archway across both the front and the back doors. Now, I know why!"

Einstein's Bagels Now Serving Gluten Free? Maybe?

A couple weeks ago, my Mom bought me a pack of Udi's Gluten-free bagels. This, in itself, was not surprising, as she likes to share her gluten-free finds with me whenever she can. The source of the bagels, however, was surprising. She got them from Einstein's Bagels on Central (near UNM).Now, a quick aside for any of you who may not know about Udi's bagels... holy @#%&^$ they are good. They're available at all the usual suspects (Whole Foods, R Downs, etc.) and they are phenomenal. End…See More

An Open Letter to the People In Charge of the Lead/Coal Work

Posted on October 10, 2008 at 8:43am 9 Comments

So, I don't know what all goes into restriping a busy pair of one-way streets from three lanes down to two. I imagine it's got to be a difficult task, full of gnarly logistical decisions.

That said, I can't help but think that things are going decidedly wrong when the lane markers have changed nearly every single time I drive through. As a resident of the student ghetto, I'm through there quite a lot, actually, and the recent work makes it far more adventurous than I'm usually… Continue

In Which the Isotopes Build a Nice Picket Fence

Posted on July 27, 2008 at 10:09pm 3 Comments

Well, I survived my weekend of baseball. The Isotopes, however, did not make it easy.

I haven't said anything about Friday or Saturday night's games, because, well, they were kinda bad. In both contests, the 'Topes fell behind early, due to a combination of poor pitching and porous defense. Then, they couldn't come back. Boo! Suffice to say, I was desperately hoping that the finale, tonight, would be a better affair.

Initially, it seemed my hopes would be dashed. The… Continue

Walkoffs, or a Bad Night for the Boys in Blue

Posted on July 24, 2008 at 11:19pm 4 Comments

So, I'm going to be spending a LOT of time at Isotopes Park this weekend. How much time? Well, I was at tonight's game. And I'll be at tomorrow's night's, too. And Saturday's. And Sunday's. Kind of a good thing I like baseball, eh?

Well, if the rest of the games are as good as tonight's, I'll be in good shape.

Of course, if the rest of the games start off like tonight's that might be bad. See, after breezing through the first inning, the 'Topes ran into some trouble in the… Continue

We Didn't Start the Fire

So, this evening a little before 6, I was driving back to my apartment from my folks' place. The route took me down Lead, whereupon I noticed something a little off. Namely, a column of smoke drifting up and over the road. Not something you see everyday, really. It appeared to be coming from area of the little market that's a block from my house. My first thought, really, was that it was waaaaaay to early to be roasting chile, and besides, there was way too much smoke for that to be the… Continue

The Ballad of Four

Posted on April 12, 2008 at 12:00am 1 Comment

I've just returned from the home opener of the Albuquerque Isotopes, a highly entertaining affair, despite the fact that it was flipping cold the whole night, and the fact that the Isotopes lost. Still, it was baseball, glorious baseball, played live before me in a beautiful stadium. The trappings of Summer were there, despite being buried under the freakishly glacial conditions, and having spent the past five months looking forward to the opener, I have to say I came away sated.

But… Continue
