Dave's memorial was a very moving event for me, as I'm sure it was to all of the other folks there. It was very cool to look around the crowded El Ray & see the size of the crowd. They were each there for one reason & one reason only - they loved Dave!
What a gap he is going to leave in the ABQ music scene! Not to mention the personal side of the loss I feel. I recon I'll miss him forever. I never saw Dave in a crappy mood. I never saw him not excited when he watched some music. The first time I met him was on a blue cruise way out in the middle of the ocean;, a long way from our desert & a guy wanders past me wearing a Sultans t-shirt. Being the owner of such a shirt myself as well as a shameless Sultans groupie I am somewhat ashamed to admit that i tackled the guy demanding to know all of the details re: the shirt. I let him up when he convinced me he was Dave Denny, THE Dave Denny, no shit. the author of many a musical travel for me, the total voice of the blues here in abq, a true idol & the only thing that came out of my mouth (yes, the one i would kiss my mother with if she were still kissable) was " Ohh mah gawd, I thought you were tall & white with some kind of blond hair". gawd, I felt like an idiot. An invisible idiot, if I could just pull it off. But, no, There we were face-to-face. He laughed & told me "everybody does". What a kind & gentle individual he was.
His is a big big loss.
