wow, doug. way to insult someone who didn't even actually disagree with anything you said. can you explain how obts was "wrong" in what she posted? despite how uncomfortable you might feel about the assertion that the author of the pledge was a ch...

thanks, obts. you made me go look up francis bellamy and read a bit more about the history of the pledge and what bellamy intended. the page I read said that he wanted to write "with equality, liberty, and justice for all," in a nod to adler's six...

!Tapas!

My sweetie and I checked out the brand new Cosmo Tapas, in east Nob Hill tonight. They're in the old Martini Grill space at Central and Sierra. They've only been open since Monday, but you wouldn't know it based on the food, drinks, atmosphere or service. It's a pretty smooth operation and absolutely enjoyable.

To start, we chose a couple of drinks from their mixed drink menu. My sweetie had a Huaso, which is essentially a pisco sour. Pisco is like a grape brandy, which is the national beverage… Continue

gosh darn it, I just plain dig this town

So, my partner is out of town on business (which I remembered only when he woke me up this morning to say "See you tomorrow, sweetie" to which I responded "See you tomorrow?! What the hell does that mean?!") and I took advantage of his absence to indulge in one of my fav rituals of single life. Namely, dinner alone at il vicino, with the most recent issue of my favorite magazine and a glass of red wine. If you show up early, and it's not a weekend night, no one cares if you occupy a table… Continue

cafe giuseppe in nob hill

yesterday afternoon, we took the pup for a walk and ended up at cafe giuseppe at the corner of silver and wellesley. the old apartments at this corner have been "fixed up" with bright paint, nice landscaping, and some, uh, interesting rooflines, and there are a now a handful of retail spaces. guiseppe's has a lovely, simple interior and a cute, comfy patio (though I think it's still a work in progress). they also serve tasty snacks, and quality coffee.

my sweetie had a pretty solid americano an… Continue

silver and yale frogger

at least twice a day, I cross yale at silver avenue, on my way to work and school and home again. I don't think it's too far a stretch to say there are hundreds of people who cross yale at this intersection everyday. and it's dangerous. the worst hours are right around lunch and a half hour on either side of 5 p.m. at all times of the day and night, though, many drivers exceed the 25 mph limit by at least 10 to 15 mph. people on foot also have the dodge the constant stream of cars… Continue

"New Mexico Opinion Survey"

so I just answered the phone and agreed to participate in a "brief survey" regarding upcoming congressional elections. the first thing I did was ascertain that the caller was from "New Mexico Opinion Surveys." he began by asking me questions which really bounced all over the place, from "rate these people on a scale of 1 to 100 (richardson, marty chavez, heinrich, wilson, some guy I'd never heard of, vigil-giron)" to "what do you consider the two most pressing issues facing our nation?"

after a… Continue

Thanks for the link- I've read it before :-) I had a friend who fell into the cult of woo. Try as I might, I could find no way to reconcile it with reason. Alas.

Thank you for the updated photo! What a little roly poly! This is wonderful. Dogs are amazing creatures. Here is the day I found him...he's come a long way and understandably likes his food now!....

Do you still have Rufus? I'm the one that discovered him on a heavy chain with no food or water on election day, nothing but skin and bones. He was one of my shelter favorites when I worked there but I quit before he was adopted. Great to discover he found a loving home at last! I still have the photos from the day I found him. He looks so nice and chubby now!

How could Jesus abandon Kincaid like that? Surely the Wrath will be smote upon these pustular monsters, whose faith obviously was not great enough, and surely that is why their life savings were whisked away.
