Hi Renee, Chickens can tolerate cold weather as long as it's not too drafty. I couldn't tell how big their roosting box is from your description, but it doesn't seem overly big. The girls will likely be fine without having to shut the door. Their ...

You can get chicks anytime, but if you are starting with baby chicks, it's a bit easier to wait until spring because the weather will be warmer. But you can start with older hens once you have your coop done.

Chickens? I want chickens. Tomatoes against a wall are continuing to ripen but those in open areas are gone. Fall lettuce, spinach, peas, bok choy, etc are all happy. Really, though...about the chickens. Do I have to wait till the spring to get ch...

Hi Lisa, hope your hen is feeling better today. If you think your chicken has any respiratory disease you can use garlic to treat her. (this is good for humans too!) Give her a large minced clove (in a little oatmeal or something if she won't eat...

Hi Jennifer, Yeah, I'm happy to be without TV, but I'll be more diligent next year by going by Santa Fe's frost warnings instead of Albuquerque. I even looked at the local TV stations online, but didn't see a frost warning posted. September 22nd i...

We're building a new chicken coop too. You'll have to come by and see it. We've never had a problem with our chickens laying in the winter, so go for it. Have fun in Colorado and talk soon. Jen

Jen Sweetie! I covered my basil...but today I pulled out most of my tomatoes. I left a few to see what will happen. I have some beets, carrots and lettuce coming up from planting a few weeks ago but I don't think the area gets enough sun in winter...

I live in Edgewood and we were zapped by frost two weeks ago on September 22nd. I was completely unaware of the frost warning too...probably the only disadvantage of not having TV.

I think it's the low lying areas. Being in the far South Valley, all that cold air seems to float down towards us, hit the Black Mesa and stick around to see what's going on down here. I lost all my fall plantings of green beans. Grrr. My neighbo...

Love the triumphant music at the end of your video. I was surprised to see so many cars when you arrived. I usually hike during the week when there are far fewer people. Thanks for posting!

Near North Valley...Griegos and San Ysidro area...lost basil, lots of tomatos, all the left over squash went, the green beans took a big hit....it was awful. We tend to be about 5-10 degrees colder also...I wonder if it has to do with the ditches ...

We just got our first egg a few days ago! But just one. The others are checking out the boxes and looking plump and ready to lay.

We were okay last night in the NE Heights also. Jen, are your cuckoo marans laying yet? Mine are not, altho they seem to be checking out laying boxes.

Yes, we definitely have less rain than those in the near south valley or in the city. I was at a friend's house in the near south valley in late June. He said what a great year it was for the fruit trees with all the rain they'd been having. I sa...

Hi Jen. Gosh, thank you for your help. I still want to get some goats milk from you. I spent most of the morning that I talked to you on the phone w/ "goat people" and was able to have "Dr. Miracle" come down and give us advice. We needed to act fast, and it was suggested that we give our sick baby goat cows milk (until we could get goats milk). We started him on penicilin, a pro-biotic (i think its the same one your recommended) and a little "goat tylenol". He is up! And thankfully, eating. I'll try to get in touch w/ you about getting some goat milk. Thanks again!! cherie
