Show Me Your Topograpy and I'll Show You Mine

Experimental Geography invites everyone (ie. you) to mark up a bare-bones street map of Albuquerque with what constitutes your personal geography. Here’s one “X marks the spot” from my life: I saw kids playing jump rope withContinue

STUCK (outside city limits)

Out here, past the “official” commuter belt, the hazards are a little different than you find in Albuquerque. I live on a few acres in a little valley backed up to the Ballinger ranch with its eleven thousand non-subdivided acres of piñon/juniper/grasslands that are range to a… Continue

My Brother Must Be An 8 (Less--or more--taboo than it sounds... "Melanin" in Burque)

When I think of melanin, I don’t think of the 1927 Von Luschan chromatic scale with its 36 points of potential overgeneralizations. Rather, I think of my brother’s shoulder blades. My mother… Continue

My Favorite Coffee House To Flip My Wheelchair In

I’ve been using a wheelchair for distances since the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s Birthday. I have multiple sclerosis and currently have some left side impairment so on February 12th of this year, I got into my first wheelchair. It was a clunker, “emancipated” (or borrowed… Continue

A brown paper sack with an orange and a roadtrip

I’ve been thinking about the love artists have for craft – making art in a recession is a beloved act -- and in the last two days I have had a chance to be witness to a good dose of that fist sized organ that beats inside anyone who dedicates her life to the kick of the creative. Thursday I saw Ramona King’s one woman show (which is still running—through this Sunday). It’s titled “Maternal Dreamer #2: Living the Dream,” though if I had… Continue

Arts Activism for Women's Health

I wanted to write briefly about my work for the Governor’s Women’s Health Office. I’m a firm believer in arts, music, and literature as activism that can be put to the service of many different issues and causes---and back in February during… Continue

Datcher Show & Openers

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to the openers for Michael Datcher. If you come out Saturday night May 9th to the Outpost at 7:30 pm, you'll hear some of my personal favorites. Maisha Baton is a phenomenal poet and was perhaps the most significant professor in my too long academic career--in a women's studies class she peeled back the brainwashing of my childhood. I also had the chance to blurb her book, Flight Time, which thrilled me. Stephanie and Virginia (remember Out ch'Yonda) are a… Continue

Hi Lisa!
glad to know someone else in the program (even if it is CNF.) Is this fall your first semester?

Lisa - I really enjoy your posts by the way. You're a VERY good writer. I had to laugh at today's post after thinking about my change since I moved here from the SF Bay Area. I'm looking out my window right now and it appears to be a typical summer day out where I used to live - cloud cover, etc. I didn't know how much I glowed in the dark until I lived out here for a while. Now I had a really good farmer's tan. My wife laughs when I threaten to work out in the yard without a shirt on. Something about how the planes from the Sunport might have to divert their flight patterns to avoid the brightness. Anyway, keep up the great stories!!!

Thanks for friending me :-)
The trick with blogging is to not blog the stuff that you want to publish... or you can blog about stuff that you already published. I use my blog as a place to play, not publish refined work.
