the boy; I have a necessity for a nap between classes and I don't see anybody providing couches for me to lie on. Jeesh, we need to pick our battles here about what "rights" are worth fighting for, I think. We can start with the rights that don't ...

Fun fact: totally not a smoker here Also fun: sidewalks, being city property, are totally okay for people to smoke on. So really, it is those places in addition to the designated areas. Also: I think the problem is for those with a necessity of ...

"so many smokers display the same arrogant attitudes we see here." There's enough arrogance on both sides of the issue to go around. I don't throw butts down. If there's not a place to dispose of them, they are extinguished and put back in the pa...

First, a ban on smoking indoors. Then, people want to ban it outdoors, where they forced smokers to go in the first place. (Has anyone noticed how many non-smokers hang out outside with their smoking friends, because that's where everyone is?) Fin...

Profile Information

Where I Live:
Just outside the student ghetto when not being a college student in New Orleans
About Me:
I'm a graduate from Albuquerque High School (class of 07), and a political science major at Tulane University (history double major? We'll see). I've this absurd idealism, which matches well with my having no plans to improve the world, but some general notion that I should. I'd like to write for Foreign Affairs someday, retire and teach, and perhaps do a bit of Unitarian ministry. Also, I tend to spend an awful lot of time reading history books and designing wargames that I never end up playing.
Favorite Thing(s) About Albuquerque:
It has a distinctive sense of place lacking elsewhere; best sunsets this side of Mars
Relationship Status:
Single
My Website:
http://kelseydatherton.blogspot.com
What I'm Reading:
blogs. Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology. Clausewitz. Bibles, Barbershops, and BET. And newspaper editorials, which is the unhealthiest of reading selections.
What I'm Listening To:
Pandora. They might Be Giants. Gil Scott Heron. Andrew Jackson Jihad. The Build.

UNM's Smoking Ban, or How to Lose Students and Alienate Community

In the Albuquerque Journal this morning, there was an article discussing the new smoking bans on the University of New Mexico campus. Here's a map of the designated smokContinue

We are Halfway to the Future (a mediation on SB 12)

Today in my dorm room in New Orleans I watched the live feed of the senate debate on SB 12 (the domestic partnership one). Being a bit of a political junkie, I found the whole thing inherently fascinating, and was especially appreciative of the New Mexico Independent's liv… Continue

Refreshing our Short-term Political Memory

In 2004, there was a mysterious fire in the bosque, and our fire department responded to it. Also in our bosque was a device for converting vegetable oil into biodiesel. Because of the suspicious nature of the fire, our sheriff brought APD to the scene of the crime. Sheriff D… Continue

Where are we again?

Thanks for your kind and thoughtful comment. I used to live in New Orleans (right near Tulane) and agree with your assessment of the city. I could never quite articulate the difference between that city and ours. Thanks for the insight. You are quite right!

I love you, even this far away. Reviving Nora's old APS logo? Brilliant. Almost as brilliant as Anonymous. Just no EFG, OK?

I love online arguments. "Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
