Playing with the Toys on Old Route 66

"You can get a lot farther with a kind word and a gun than a kind word alone."

Al Capone

Today I took the Goldwing out for a run along old route 66. It was really windy and as usual, no one around. So I took out my toy to play a bit. This weekend I am going to Juarez for a little visit, I will be packing, my camera that is.…

Naming Rights for The Pit Sold to PBR's Ty Murray!

UNIVERSITY & CESAR CHAVEZ SE--Somehow I wasn't expecting the Professional Bull Riders' Ty Murray to end up giving his name to The Pit. But the official new name for UNM's University Arena will be "Ty Murray's PBR PIT." Apparently the bull riding event last weekend made so much money that the bull rider was convinced to opt for outright naming rights.

This is not the first university basketball facility to sell its rights. In 1997… Continue

want a Grocery Store Downtown?

Hey young and old urbanites, I wish to address an issue that so many of my downtown friends and clients bring up... "We need a quality, full scale grocery store Downtown!"

It has gotten to the point in the last l5 or so years of active redevelopment of the urban core that we have HIT THE WALL with our progress! Buyer's come to me wanting to move downtown and many end up buying elsewhere because of access to a reasonable grocery store. Or, they buy downtown and want to sell a couple… Continue

Looking at Languages

I don’t consider myself a jetsetter, but from time to time I get to leave the country on business – I’ve just returned from a 10 day trip to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and am still somewhat jetlagged. Add being jolted out of bed… Continue

Willy Porter at the Cooperage, Amazing!

Thanks to the tickets I won here on DCF, my husband and I went to the Willy Porter show last night. It was an amazing show! Willy Porter is an incredible musician, talented, inspiring and funnier than hell! I haven't laughed so hard in years. He made me cry, laugh and just plain sit in awe of his talent.

Michael Chapdelaine opened the show, as usual, he put on an awesome show! We have seen Michael perform several times in the past and have… Continue

Kickin' it on Saturdays

A couple of years ago I switched my boys to a new league for playing soccer. We had been with another league but I just got tired of the antics - and found that Zia Futbol is a great place for my kids to have fun and learn the game.

And while spring soccer usually involves some cold games and practices (it was SNOWING during our last Friday practice!) we can usually count on some gorgeous days as well.

I love watch my children play, of… Continue

Take the RailRunner to White Sands?

I stumbled across this story from some online publication called and was shocked by how much ignorance is contained in one short post about the Duke City and New Mexico.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary: it's Time!

Considering we had snow flurries here in the Q two days ago, it's just a bit too early, yet I couldn't wait even another weekend to start my garden. Chili and tomatoes will go in pots, so I built a waist high garden today for the herbs. It's four foot square. I laid screen over the wooden slats at the bottom, then a piece of cloth, then two inches of pea gravel, six inches of garden soil and one inch of… Continue

Whew, we finished freshening up the website and there's more to come, but for now, we've got a new design by Mary Lambert, some new photos, and best of all (for us) and hopefully easy (for donors) some Paypal donation buttons. The Sunday Poem: Elaine Schwartz... Pilgrimage

Just reading this powerful piece is itself a "Pilgrimage"...a search for meaning, for significance. This poem has eyes. It sees beyond headlines. It caresses the human face of Truth. It will follow you home.

Albuquerque poet Elaine G. Schwartz lives with her husband, Daniel, and Purr’l the Postmodern Pussy Cat. Her work, best described as a tapestry of place and political imagination, has appeared in numerous publications including… Continue

Hominy (Posole)

Being relatively new to ABQ, can someone tell me the pros and cons of frozen vs canned hominy for making posole? I've used the frozen, and remember the "aroma" of canned from many many many years ago when it completely turned me off. Would it be more acceptable to use in posole, or just easier?
