Recovery Cat 7.31.2010

With great lawyers you have discussed lepers and crooks. You've been through all of F. Scott Fitzgerald's books. You're very well read. It's well known. But something is happening here and you don't know what it is. do you, Mister Jones? Dylan, "Ballad of a Thin Man" (1965).

Thai Vegan ROCKS

I have to admit that I am totally in love with the food at Thai Vegan, which opened last week at Osuna near San Mateo.

I confess - I've had 4 meals in the past 5 days there!!!

As a vegetarian (not vegan), the menu is diverse, the "faux" meat is delicious, and there are plenty of vegetable-only dishes to choose from too.

I've sampled the Pad Thai, the spring rolls, the golden tofu appetizer, the Cashew "Chicken", the fresh Ginger stir fry, the tempura vegetables,… Continue

Put These Words/Phrases on the FCC List

I have some pet peeves w/certain words/phrases that are over-done. I'd love to see these banned:

"At this point in time" - what about 'now'?

"Yummy" - should be banned by anyone over kindergarten age particularly by Food Reviewers!

"Bucks" or "Grand" - instead of Dollars as used by TV anchors

Anyone else?

How to Lute a Sunday in 'Burque for a Jade Earful

Imagine you hear the sound of pearls falling on a carved jade plate. The sound is round and smooth, delicate, falls gently into the curves of your ear canals, stringing a beaded melody. Or you hear thousands of hoof-beats trampling moist forest floor, thudding, the breath of men and horses straining, spears lifted. Or you hear a hawk lighting on a pine, claws clasping, soft bend of a branch, drops of morning dew falling to earth.

Or perhaps… Continue

Morning Fix - "Just give me the keys to get back in the house!"

UNM sued again...this time by creative writing professor and well-published poet Diane Thiel, charging retaliation for Thiel's criticism of the university's handling of the "Mistress Jade" affair. Mistress Jade, actually UNM creative writing teacher Lisa Chavez, posed for several… Continue

It's official- Self Serve has been banned from Facebook.

Self Serve has been censored. Sound familiar? Darn, we're sick of this. This is not a battle we meant to choose, but those vulva images are apparently just not okay with Facebook.

We posted an important PSA about the unfortunate surge in female genital cosmetic surgery. You can check out… Continue

Can't wait for tonight!

Tonight will be our first performance at the Route 66 Casino! I'm excited about the new venue and look forward to the fun environment! I've taken the family to the Buffet at Route 66, but the new Thunder Road Steakhouse and Cantina sounds even more delicious! Adding the live entertainment, I hope it will be a great experience for all those who come out to see us tonight! Nos… Continue

Notes from the Russian River

Jan. 4 It's a brisk morning and the sky is gray-white and overcast. I'm staying at the River Inn in Monte Rio, a small, sleepy town along the Russian River, enjoying a brief vacation between semesters in graduate school. The River Inn, nestled among dark-green trees, is a comfortable ochre European-style house, with a dining room heated by a potbelly iron stove and wide windows facing out onto the river, and small, unheated bedrooms on the… Continue

East Central and International District Neighborhood Update

Neighbors,

This summer brings some exciting events and goings on in our community. I wanted to take a moment share some of the details with you.

Long Term Neighborhood Planning

Our communities are going through an extensive long term planning process, one for the International District (Councilor Garduno area) and the East Central Gateway (Councilor Harris area). This is a critical process that will determine how funds are spent in our neighborhoods and our input is… Continue

Huning Castle Apartments Fire: One Year Anniversary

huning highland castle apartments

We are approaching the one year anniversary of the Downtown Apartment Fire at the historic Huning Castle Apartments which took place August 3rd, 2009.

I don't know of any 'good' that has come of this fire other than this year's story line from Br Ba (AMC TV's Breaking Bad) which utilized actual scenes shot from the KOBtv… Continue

Morning Fix - Poll Shows Heinrich Losing to Nobody You Know

Can you even name the Republican candidate in CD1? I didn't think so. But a poll shows Democratic Congressman Heinrich losing to John Barela 51% to 45%. Whatever that means, it can't be good for Martin Heinrich.

Thank goodness we're normal!… Continue

Bittersweet Birthday: Twenty Years of the ADA in Albuquerque

It is a bittersweet birthday, this 20 year anniversary celebration for the Americans with Disabilities Act. I’ve yet to learn how Burqueños are marking this day, but perhaps folks will fill me in. To be sure, the celebration is less important than the achievements over the past 20 years. Legislation that provides accessibility to over 50 million Americans is a profound… Continue

Sunday 'nafternoon rides - Two wheels through Fringecrest

The last couple of Sunday afternoons I've gone for a ride on two wheels, something that's fast becoming a habit. Here are a couple of quick observations from today.

A bicycle ride is unlike driving a car or walking in that you can cover a fair amount of ground without either missing details or tuning out because it takes a long time to get anywhere. Today's ride took me to the Ridgecrest area, and included a small amount of rain and a good breeze. I took a small amount of… Continue
