Gardens + Bicycles + Streamers = ??

What do you get when you combine a Montessori education, with a schoolbus, a green thumb, and a mission? The WHO Farm Mobile, of course! This past Saturday, special guests Daniel Bowman Simon and Casey Gustowarow joined neighborhood residents, business owners, students, artists and activists in the 3rd Annual Carnuel Road Parade & Fiesta. The WHO (White House Organic) Farm Mobile isn't just any double decker schoolbus - its second deck is… Continue

From Our Friends at Planned Parenthood

Dear Friend of PPNM,

We are shocked and galled!

Yesterday PPNM staff exiting our parking lot noticed an injured woman lying semi-conscious on the sidewalk in front of our surgical clinic. Staff immediately summoned police and paramedics who responded quickly, ultimately taking the woman to the hospital. She had not been a patient here, but had obviously been abused by someone somewhere else, staggered here and collapsed.

Meanwhile, several anti-choice protesters… Continue

confession time: I used to be a cocktail waitress at Brian O'Brien's

So, what's this about Brian O'Brien's burning down? I saw the raw footage on the Abq Journal's website, but can't find a dang news story about it.

I guess it's confession time: I used to work at that bar. Yes, I worked at the bar with the freaking dumbest name ever. In 2002, I returned to Abq from Europe--where my impending marriage had just crumbled--and I needed to line up some work so I could save up enough money to move to Colorado and start an internship with High Country News.… Continue

Rise Up - The House of Bread Cometh

The first Albuquerque location of House of Bread is now open at Indian School and Carlisle near Los Poblanos Organics.

I bought a loaf of honey whole wheat and tasted a bit of the Dakota Bread - yum. Check it out for yourself. Looks like it's a franchise, with local owners.

In that handy little strip mall you can now get your organic vegetables, your… Continue

New Years Eve

Hey everyone. I will be in New Mexico for the entire Holiday Season and was wondering what's the best thing to do on New Years. It is my Birthday on that day and would like to do something fun in either Santa Fe or Albuquerque. I'm thinking some sort of Hotel/Dinner package with a friend or possible romance you never know it's only Oct. I am gay so anything that's fun not too much into the club scene, more of a bar/lounge person. So gay friendly is fine :) I heard the Hyatt has some nice… Continue

Are Teacher Pensions Safe? A Look At the NMERB Portfolio

NOB HILL--I looked at the TV screen yesterday afternoon while the DOW settled into a stunning decline of 777 points. The S&P alone suffered a paper loss of around $700 billion. $700,000,000,000!! That number may sound familiar--it is the same figure for the total of the so-called bailout that was defeated by Congress yesterday. Gone in one day. Not scared yet? How about this: if you had $500,000 in your 401K yesterday you lost about $35,000 in an… Continue

Where does ABQ's art scene go now?

This editorial in the Philadelphia Inquirer encapsulates a huge issue in the arts & culture world right now - though the arts are a robust part of most cities' economies, many arts groups exist on a knife edge of financing each year. And with financial markets in turmoil, there's even more worry happening at many non-profits that rely on individual and… Continue

The re-striping of Lead Coal Started.

They stuck out notices yesterday that they were re-blacking the street, tonight when I got home form work It had begun.

I voted against the bond/plan i continue to oppose the stupid plan, to turn these major downtown and freeway feeding arteries into 2 lane, rage driver filled, quagmires of pollution! Mark my words this will be bad, and when they do their monthly closing of central it will be even worse.

This is like congress! The…

Monday Morning Traffic

I had the pleasure of driving in trafffic this morning at 7:45. As I was driving it seemed amazing to me. Everyone on the road is in a rush to get to where they are going so much so they are willing to cause traffic to come to a complete stop so they could move to the front of the line. Thank goodness I only have to venture in to that mess every once in a while. And business owners who have employees. Did you ever consider staggering your start times so everybody doesn't have to be at work at… Continue

Returning to Albuquerque

I’ve been staring at the screen off and on for days, trying to figure out what to blog about this week.

This happens sometimes when I’ve been away from Albuquerque for too long. And I have been away longer than usual, thanks to some extra travel this month. But in some ways, I'm never that far away from Albuquerque.

So I’m wondering:

Should I start with the most popular question of the week from my colleagues here in DC -… Continue

Bragging Rights

The football game on Friday night was fun and exciting and the Matadors beat the Knights 24-7. Woo Hoo! they are now 5-0 and looking good. But there is something even more exciting......

My baby made it onto the Saturday newspaper!!! That's my "Jakey Snakey" doing the blocking.

He was so proud to show me the article this morning when he came over to visit and have breakfast (he couldn't resist my offer of bacon). And… Continue

A Maize Maze-ing We Will Go!

We went to the Rio Grande Community Farm's Maize Maze for the first time today. This was my first time at a maize maze and we all had a great time. As we have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old I was very happy to find out they have two mazes - one only 1.4 miles and the other 2.3 miles. We chose the shorter course and were rewarded with only one mini-meltdown. And there were several places where we had to… Continue

What would you do with $206,000,000???

Well, someone here in New Mexico is going to be forced to answer that oh-so-tough question.
Seems that someone (no it wasn't me, unfortunately...) hit the Powerball last night.

Must be nice..

If it had been me, I'd could think of a ton of things I would want to do, but nothing I would do off the top of my head, other than hire a really good lawyer and a really good accountant...

Maybe next time!

Community and Local Politics: A Week Immersed in the Obama Campaign

As a newly proclaimed political junkie, this has been one heck of a year. I've gone from nail biting, disgruntle blogging, and have personally dented the local supply of two buck chuck. It has been more manic than my family reunions, and that's saying something!

The past week specifically has prompted a higher level of involvement for me. Mike and I became more interested in connecting with other politically minded people and venting… Continue

I'm sorry, but....

being a transplant from San Francisco I just have to say....

WHY?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

Why did the Isotopes have to change who they feed? I was perfectly fine with the Marlins. And part of why I moved here was cuz I could at least have some baseball, even though it was AAA, and it had nothing to do with the Dodgers. I'm a Giants fan through and through, so what is the most hated MLB team to me???? The Dodgers.

But NO!!! Today I find out that my beloved AAA team has… Continue
