This Sunday, 'Burqueno's cinephiles have a unique opportunity -- to see the distinctive beauty of ABQ's downtown captured on film
and to support a local filmmaker launch his latest film. And five bucks is all it will cost when you show up at The Guild for Sunday's world premiere screening of Ewen Wright's short film,
Validation. The cost of admission is fitting, in its way, because five bucks…

I met my friend Arthur when he was a bassoonist and composer. We produced concerts together in Philadelphia for several years. He eventually decided that being a musician would never be a really lucrative career for him. He and his wife town to go to nursing school in up-state New York. If he began his education earlier in life, he would probably be a brain surgeon, but today he is a really smart nurse at UNM. Now that he has begun losing his hearing, this turns out to be a good career choice…

When I watch touring shows, I often look for the kinds of lights they carry. Not all shows carry their own lights, but I do like to know what the companies who carry lights are bringing on their tour.
I just watched
Grease in
Denver Wednesday night and was interested to see that they had an array of…

When I say "Route 66 in New Mexico," what do you think of? Do you see the glow of neon signs shimmering on Central Avenue after a monsoon? Do you imagine the curved corners of stuccoed 1950s motels, now worn and cracked under the weight of time? Do you hear the revving of an old engine as an ancient Chrysler makes its way through the lights downtown? We think of Route 66 as Central Avenue, but there is another Route 66 in New Mexico.
In the…

Keeping fit and healthy has always been a passion of mine but I really enjoy getting my workout by playing rather than just exercising. When I was younger gymnastics, softball and cheerleading kept me active and in great shape. As I grew older and had kids I slowed down a little but kept playing softball and started riding my bike all around town then I found soccer.
I love playing soccer and give it total credit for keeping me healthy, happy and in shape. But as much as I love the…

I get inspired each and every week to do my regular DCF post. There's a certain oomph afforded me when reading the preceding day's post by Johnny Mango. His two part series on the Belen BNSF line and Harvey House were great. Not to mention his numerous posts about adventurous episodes with his grandson...
But then it all goes to hell. I have no finishing power. I probably won't even finish this post.…

NOB HILL--The little boy stood in front of the judge who was hearing the custody case.
"Would you like to live with your father?" the judge asked.
"No," the child said,
"he beats me."
"Would you rather live with your mother?"
"No, she beats me too!"
"Well, where do you want to live?"
"I want to live with the Lobos. They can't beat anybody!"
Old dogs and old jokes comfort us in the bad…

People comment to me frequently that it must be fun to work at Popejoy because I get to watch all those shows. My response is that it’s rather like going to an office party: it’s nice to have the party, but why does it have to be at the office?
It also becomes easy to get jaded in this business. If you watch shows as a constant in your life, they can lose some of their appeal. I like to think that I’m not getting jaded, that I am just more discerning, but let’s just say that not…
