December 2007 Stories (116)

living, loving, and saying goodbye

i cant wait till this year ends. it was one of profound loss and sorrow. in june, my father in law passed after a five year battle with prostate cancer. while we never were able to leave a bitter part of the past behind, it was still sad. though my wife was able to reconcile with him after many years of estrangement, he would not allow me into his hospice room. from this i learned that i will forgive much easier real and perceived transgressions…

Albuquerque - The Good Old Days

I'm sure the very young grow weary of hearing about the "good old days" in whatever context it's offered. Well, I'm sorry, but I'm going to do it anyway. Sometimes folks need to know what came before and what things were like before they arrived on the scene.

My family moved here in 1951, just a couple of months before I was to begin the seventh grade. We arrived on June 25 in the middle of a heat wave. The daytime temperatures rose to 105 degrees every day for two weeks. We thought… Continue

slam incident

[Since Don & the Slam led me to this page, I'll kick off my occasional diatribe with this from this summer's archive.]

Poetry & Beer has been kicked to the curb, but it dusted itself off and found a new home in a matter of hours.

Poetry & Beer has moved.

Well, it's official (sort of). So on Thursday we went by the District to square away some business and make sure we were ready for January 2nd. The manager said, "___________ and ________________ said you were done after December."

Well, that was the first we'd heard of it. So, after 2 years, Poetry & Beer was kicked to the curb and we didn't even know.

After talking with one venue we checked out another and we had another venue by 10… Continue

The Albuquerque Journal makes news of illegal dumping on the Southwest Mesa and this was also a story on KOB recently.

The Cheesesteak Capital of The World

It's 54 degrees in practically balmy Philadelphia. WTF. God I love this city. And now I'm on my way to Sephora - nyah, nyah.

Made it out of Chicago yesterday by the skin of my teeth - total winter chaos, makes me appreciate New Mexico even more. However, I'm spending New Year's Eve in Baltimore, one of my favorite cities. Then I'm watching the New Mexico float in the Rose Parade before I watch USC kick ass at the…

Friends of Martini Mike! AHCH Critical Needs Drive AKA Pt III of my Holiday Series

You've heard it called by different names but it's all the same drive!

Rather than my usual tales of debauchery & shopping I am going to fill your minds with visions of warm socks. You may have caught that I started this "Critical Needs Drive" for Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless recently. This is due to some inspiration from…

Even if Trib is Saved, Will Not Be the Same Paper

The Albuquerque Tribune might have a shot of coming back. Or it might not. A story from last week's Trib says the investing company who is looking to buy the afternoon paper is more confident than they should be.
A spokesman for the Tribune's parent company, E.W. Scripps, however said the process wasn't that far along.

"We don't believe we are as far along…

Delightful Christmas!!

I was at my grandmother's (Nana's) house with my Mom and Don (my step-dad). We were doing the usual Christmas Eve traditions we do every year. All the gifts had been brought over the day before. That evening around 4:30pm, we arrived with most of dinner. Mom and I prepared and warmed up what was left to prepare for dinner. When dinner was ready, we all prepared our dinner plates -- buffet style. Black Forest ham, sweet potatoes with toasted marshmallows on top, fresh green beans, fruit…

Another New Year

Our 2007 Family portrait

Christmas is over and New Year's Eve is closing in. I have a love/hate relationship with the Holiday season.

I HATE the commercialism of it all. This year we gave mostly handmade by us or traded with other artist gifts. They were a hit!

I LOVE the family connection and the reflection on the year coming to an end. We went to see The Nutcracker ballet this year. My sister in law is the ballet mistress for the…

The True Gift of the Holidays...Catching Up

Ahhh, the holidays are nearly complete and another new year with new opportunities to make a fool of myself is at hand. While I enjoy the many 4 day weeks with breaks in the middle of the week I get to suffer through (kinda feels like I'm driving with a really bad clutch, vroooom, stall, vroooom, stall, vroooom, die) I really love the weekends when my myspace inbox fills with notes of "Hey, I'm in town, let's get together."

It's a funny dynamic I have with many of my old classmates…

La Bella Luna

Did anybody notice the incredible weather we had on Christmas Eve? I love the moon and I love looking at it, and it looked trully magnificent on Christmas Eve. My family walks around Old Town and the Country Club area on Christmas Eve, It is a family tradition. It has always been the nicest time except when my friend Russell caught on fire posing for the camera (he sat to close to a luminaria). It is still the best story yet...maybe when I was in a wheel chair comes a close second, people… Continue

Have a quiet and pleasant Christmas...but

NOB HILL-- But if you have come to the DCF today searching for excitement with a holiday theme, you might want to try this recycled tale from the sidewalks of Central Ave. It's a trip back to The a time when The Book Stop was still located next door to the Flying Star, and Christmas seemed to have a dark side. I called it…
