Who Said You Have to Leave Your House to Buy Local?

Lots of things make me appreciate Albuquerque but recently I fell in love all over again when I clicked on 'shop local' at etsy.com and typed in 'Albuquerque'. There are some amazing folks doing amazing things here in ABQ and selling them on etsy.

I've known about etsy for a long time but never checked it out in depth until after I went to the… Continue

Bored

I'm so bored. I know, "if you're bored then you're boring" and all that. But I'm bored. Holidays are boring. What do people do in Albuquerque? I used to know. But I have become nearly comatose in the last year.

For instance, if I were to go out right now on a Sunday night would there be any place to go?

Ok, I'm done.

The Rooster on Atlantic Avenue

The Rooster on Atlantic Avenue

I don’t know if Barelas has ever been without roosters. In my imagination, chickens arrived here shortly after Don Pedro de Varela put roots into this soil in 1662 and have maintained a presence in Barelas ever since.

When we moved here 11 years ago, members of my family mentioned hearing roosters crowing every morning. (Even…

Don't give the police any reason to pull you over this holiday

My friend got pulled over, cuffed and arrested on suspicion of DWI this morning, December 22 at about 1:30 am. Despite the fact that he was not drunk and completely cooperative, he got nothing but attitude from the cop, even though he passed a breathalyzer test twice at the station. After he passed the test the second time, the cop released him, telling my friend that it was his lucky day because the machine didn't appear to be working right. The cop was just not willing to believe that he had… Continue

Where Your Decorations Went?

Last year someone left a Holiday display in the park. I snapped some photos before someone else took it down/home. I know there are better ways to spread the Holiday Cheer but this one cracked me up.

Watch this Video and Make a Dollar for ArtStreet

NOB HILL--"Can't we all just get along?" Well if the cause is good enough, sure.

I would like to support right-wing scribbler Mario Burgos in his efforts to raise money for ABQ Healthcare for the Homeless and their ArtStreet project. For every unique viewing of the following video, Mario's ad firm and their clients will donate one dollar to ArtStreet. The video is beautiful and the whole thing takes about 4… Continue

Gifts. Last minute and local.

Hey, does anyone want to buy me this bicycle tee for Christmas? Oh wait. it's not about me.

I'm still tracking Christmas gifts for my 5 siblings and 7 nieces/nephews. It's not looking pretty or particularly innovative at this point. Local Etsy might just save my ass with these offerings by Albuquerque artisans.…

Las Posadas de Barelas

One of my favorite Albuquerque memories is walking along the luminaria-lined streets of Barelas through a light snowfall, following the Las Posadas de Barelas nativity and enjoying the sounds of Christmas carols sung in Spanish and English. My two children, dressed up as an angel and a shepherd, were old enough to carry their candles without setting themselves on fire, and young enough to take heed of mom’s words about the dangers of…

The Art of Eating

The Albuquerque Museum is a welcome jewel in the Duke City crown. Where else in town can you find a suit of ancient armor with an arrow hole, a well-thought-out permanent collection, a traveling Egyptian exhibit and some great pasta sauce?

You won't find the pasta sauce hanging on a wall, but you will find it in the City Treats Cafe just inside the museum entrance near the gift shop. This small, from-scratch restaurant (the only things they… Continue

Don't let ABQ lose this

On Jan. 7, the Albuquerque City Council will decide whether to preserve a nearly 70-year-old part of its Route 66 heritage, or let a local developer tear it down to make way for luxury townhouses.

I'm talking about El Vado Motel, on Central…

Baubles, Bangles and Beads

I love beads. I live for beads. I string beads. I know lots about them and know where to get the steals and deals. My favorites are vintage Swarovski crystals and Venetian glass. I was thinking about my obsession with beads and where it came from.

Here in 'Burque we have great bead stores. But the one place I miss buying them was a store on…

Homeless Memorial Service: An Emailed Update

NOB HILL--Bike touring partner Mike Moye attended yesterday's memorial for the homeless dead. Here is his email report and cellphone picture.

Jon,

The ceremony, remembering those who have died on the streets, began about

1:30 yesterday next to the tiled wall behind AHCH. People started gathering

as early as 1:00 and obviously personally knew someone who had fallen to the

disease of homelessness. Some were sorrowful and some were… Continue
