A Holiday Tradition
If two performers meet on Christmas Day — or New Year’s Eve or Thanksgiving — one will certainly ask “Where’s your show tonight?” People in show biz work a lot of holidays.…

merry christmas and screw customer service... or what you get when you replace your UPS mailbox with a USPS PO Box
I just got back from the post office, where I had a notice in my PO Box that I have a package for pickup. I took the notice and got into the looooonnnnggggg line winding through the lobby. At a time when the institution we call the U.S. mail is sinking faster than one can say "Titanic," I can't help but see the obvious reasons why, especially during the busiest time of their year. First, there was the usual "one" employee working behind the counter, helping us each one by one. I don't blame…

The Sunday Poem: Katarina K. Guarascio... Bus Station
Leaving someone behind is never easy. Having someone leave you is even harder...especially in a public place like a bus station. In this season of comings and goings, this poem echoes through the waiting rooms across America.
Katarina K. Guarascio's most recent book,…

If there was ever any question that Amazon is a mindless digital behemoth with no interest in human affairs then the promotion they are running this weekend to push their new price-check app removes that last shred of doubt.
The promotion — which, to be fair, is not listed anywhere obvious on their website today — runs like this. Go into any local Main Street store. Use the price check app to scan three items and check Amazon prices for these items. On…

Lincoln Jr. High
Were any of you at Lincoln Jr. High when a student named Jones led a rock fight with Vargas? It started during noon recess and lasted all afternoon. The principal hid out. Many windows on the east side were broken.

The Sunday Poem: Zachary Kluckman... A Harvest of Thunder Throated Blossoms
"Why read poetry?" Now that's a question worth asking...especially in a column like this. The exquisite passion of Zachary Kluckman in today's poem not only offers an explanation, it is itself an example of the joy of reading great works.
Kluckman is one of the…

The Sunday Poem: Stewart S. Warren... The Palm of the Wind
It seems obvious that last week's 50 mph wind storm was not the wind the poet is talking about. Still, wind is wind, and it will take whatever is left on the branch.
Stewart S. Warren remains committed to clean water issues. Besides writing, he heads…
