Builders and Makers: What have YOU made lately?

I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart,

who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience,

who strain in the mud and the much to move things forward,

It Might be "Drought City," but it Ain't Dry

While their debut album “Weeping Whiskey, Bleeding Beer” was a punchy, wild and witty commentary on love and youth culture, full of pithy reference and romance.  And, although there is still (always) more whiskey and beer to be had, Youngsville's second album, “Drought City” is (mostly)…

The Dinner Bell - No Bull in the Barn

On Washington street just north of Zuni, there is a building that looks like a barn and once was host to the Duke City Bridge club (and before that a country-style restaurant).  Last summer, Kasey Armstrong-Lange and her husband decided to make that building a restaurant again.  So now we have Kasey's Pub and Restaurant.

The menu at Kasey's is varied, but warning to vegetarians:  there aren't a lot of choices here for you.  However, if you will eat meat or fish, there are…

A Visit to Valle de Oro...And No, It’s Not a Casino...

SECOND ST. SW—Last Thursday’s ABQ Journal had an article on birding that mentioned Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge.  It gave the address as 7851 2nd St SW.  Hmmmm….  Somewhere in that dizzying swirl of information particles that constantly recycle themselves just behind my eyeballs, there came a speck of…

Dear Adelita,

I really need some suggestions from everyone at Duke City Fix!  My 17 year old niece is going to stay with me over the summer.  She's from the Midwest and has only visited me in Albuquerque for a couple of days at a time through the years.  I don't have kids and am not sure what to do with her…

The Sunday Poem: Nick DePascal

I heard Nick DePascal read his poems at a West End Press event last year. A book of his had just been awarded one of the press's two publication prizes for 2014. I liked what I heard, and asked Nick to send something to The Sunday Poem. This is what he…

Although they aren’t as flashy as big Fourth of July fireworks displays, this Memorial Day weekend, you might notice your neighbors setting off fireworks just around the corner – and pet owners should be prepared for these celebrations in every neighborhood. Although the bright flashes and loud bangs that accompany…
