A Scooter Moment

After a long winter I took my scooter to the shop last week for its annual tune-up and oil change.  I was happily riding home this afternoon when a little black car with its windows rolled down pulled up next to me and honked. The driver was apparently angry about something and while busily yelling at me slowed and broke his lane several times.  Then he pulled ahead but seemed to want to continue his little road rage moment.

Well, that sounds bad.  And it wasn't comfortable or safe.…

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Pride and Equality Magazine hosted "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" this weekend.  Originally the film, which played at the Guild Theater, was to run on Friday and Saturday (10/21-22) nights only but due to an overwhelming response they added a third viewing on Sunday (10/23).  When the film was announced I dutifully purchased my ticktet along with many other Rocky lovers.  I don't actually remember when the last regular showing of Rocky occurred in Albuquerque or in what theater but I do…

Cafe Lush

While running endless errands during work I found a new little hole in the wall.  The food is great, service is fantastic, and the prices beat most restaurant in town.

Entrees range from $5.95 to $8.95.

And they have an espresso bar with trained baristas.  WOW!

It's Cafe Lush.

They are open Monday to Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  They will soon be open on Saturday and maybe even Sunday, assuming the staff doesn't…

Like Magic?

While roaming around Nob Hill and looking for something different, something new I found a tiny hole in the wall with a fun show.  I found a magic show.  Who knew we had a venue for live magic shows in town?  I didn't.

I've gone to three shows there and at $10 or so dollars its a good way to spend an hour and a half.  And the plus is these are really friendly folk! Parking is a challenge though - it is Nob Hill afterall.  The shows I've been to started at 7:00 p.m. and that…

Pridefest 2011

Pridefest throughout New Mexico is more than gay and lesbian people celebrating who we are as persons.  It asks people who are not gay or lesbian to be more than tolerant.  It calls for acceptance, which is both a civil right and a human right.  And with that its time to prepare for Pride in New Mexico!

With a sizable gay and lesbian population and a scenic setting at the base of the soaring Sandia Mountains, Albuquerque has become one of the more gay-popular destinations in…

Relay for Life - Help Please

Among my many interests, work and involvement in the Duke City I am also a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life.  There are teams throughout the City looking to raise funds by various means to support cancer research and support cancer patients and their caregivers.  The team I belong to is called the Court Jesters, because we mostly work in legal support services.

Here's my pitch:  I am coordinating a fundraising event on Friday, August 12, a…

Another Brilliant Show

The New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus (NMGMC) did it again this holiday season! The NMGMC gave Albuquerque the gift of music both somber and playful with "Vignettes of Christmas" directed by Mr. Aaron Howe. Mr. Howe came to the NMGMC just four months ago and right in time to begin planning and rehearsing for this show. While speaking with Mr. Gabe Torres (First Tenor Section) I learned that the chorus practiced every Monday - and their practice paid off. The NMGMC is one of the bright lights in my…

Nutcracker on the Rocks

I attended Keshet Dance Company's 14th Annual "Nutcracker on the Rocks" this afternoon. The show was staged at the National Hispanic Cultural Center here in Albuquerque.

The show was rousing and enjoyable complete with shouts and spontaneous applause from the audience. And while I'm a purist of sorts for ballet and theatre I have to admit this was, dare I say, better than the original... Don't get me wrong, I love the original. I think I enjoyed this show because it had pop music I… Continue

Wanted - Used Books

Ever have a stack of paperback or other books you don't know what to do with? I have a solution -

The Metropolitan Detention Center is always in need of reading material for the residents. Here's the only catch - if you want to donate books they must be given to one of the approved jail ministries/ministers. The ministry can carry them in.

Contact Calvary Chapel or Light & Liberty Ministries to give them the books. When you contact them be sure and ask what kind of… Continue

Gay Community Forum

Recently I posted a blog about gay hate crimes and bullying that resulted in some lively comments. That was very good.

Now the City and UNM is stepping up to the plate. Today KRKE News featured an article on a gay community forum, the link is below. It was good of them to announce that UNM has a support system in place but beyond that there are others like New Mexico AIDS Services (NMAS) and their under 21 group, Equality NM, and other events that can be found through Common… Continue

Tyler Clementi & Seth Walsh

Sadly in the United States hate crimes against gay people continue. Just today Tyler Clementi of New Jersey committed suicide because he was "outed". Last week Seth Walsh of Texas committed suicide because he was taunted by his junior high school classmates.

Recent studies show that nine out of ten gay kids are harrassed and gay kids are four times more likely to commit suicide than straight kids. Blame it on outdated religious principles, blame it on the political right, blame it on… Continue

School for Wives

I'm just walking in from the Kimo Theatre where School for Wives is playing. It's an oldie (right out of 17th century France) but a goodie. It's a comedy. I'll spare the details because that happens to be in the events section of DCF under the same title.

Tonight was opening night and the show was spot on. Save for an awkward moment before the play started when the comic relief duo started warming up the audience and we weren't quite prepared for it. The cast put on a great show and… Continue
