Ever go to the Downtown Growers Market and stand in line for some delicious basil lemonade and pie? If so, you might have met Raven, of Black Bird Pies. She's been a staple at the Downtown Growers Market and other growers markets around town since I can't remember when! Raven, or…

Urbane Cowboy

Note: since I don't really blog, I would like to post the stories I write for Local iQ to DCF. If that is not kosher with this community (I'm pretty green about this kind of thing), I am happy to not post and rather read all of your fine blogs. I just felt the need to exchange. —KH

MOVE PAST THE STATUS QUO, TIME FOR A NEW VISION FOR OUR STATE

In New Mexico, times have been tough. The Land of Enchantment has been gripped by economic uncertainty for over three years now. But, after almost half a decade living year-to-year (and sometimes month-to-month), New Mexico may be turning a corner and it’s time we got serious about a new, long-term vision for the Land of Enchantment.  We must stop rehashing the same old issues and put forth some bold new initiatives.

The time is right…

In remembrance of Albuquerque Film Festival founding father, Dennis Hopper, on the year anniversary of his death. We miss you Dennis!

In remembrance of our founding father, Dennis Hopper, on the year anniversary of his death. We miss you Dennis!

“In 2009, we set out to create a film festival in Albuquerque. It was my dream to screen Easy Rider since it was the 40th Anniversary of the film that I believe set the indie film revolution in motion.

Someone once told me to dream big so I dreamed that I was in the Kimo Theater watching Easy Rider with Dennis Hopper. I knew…

GMO issue at the New Mexico Legislature 2011 - UPDATE

GMO issue at the New Mexico state legislature 2011

UPDATE: Due to a strong lobbying push from the large corporations that patent and market these GMOs, and the fact that the NM Chili Association is "in-bed" with these corporations, this bill was LOST on the house floor in the week following this post.

ON SHOULD KNOW: That, aside from permenently invading native, natural seed stock, one of the huge dangers of…

State senators who must be replaced because they don't represent the people

Sen. Munoz of Gallup-McKinley Co., Sen. Phil Griego of San Jose-Northern NM, & Sen. Sapien of Corrales-Sandoval voted to allow out-of-state corporations such as:

  • Wal-Mart
  • Target
  • Lowes
  • Home Depot
  • Starbucks

to NOT PAY state income taxes on profits earned in New Mexico.

This tax break allows corporations to bascially steal…

Sojourn

Have I said lately just how much I love Albuquerque, and New Mexico in general?

If I haven't, I feel the need to state it anew. I love the climate, the landscape, the cuisine, and the great people we've met in person and on-line (via Duke City Fix). I feel great about the opportunity I've taken to revisit the state of my youth (geographically speaking; I've never left the figurative state) and I'm doubly glad that my wife, who had her doubts prior to our relocation, has loved it all… Continue

Sad, mad, frustrated, worried about the Gulf oil leak?

Yeah, me, too. "Obsessed" would likely be a better word. Or "sick with grief and anxious about the future of an ocean that has been ruined not just by corporate mismanagement and a lack of government oversight but also thanks to our ridiculous and gluttonous consumption of resources" (Okay, that was 37 words.)

Anyway, wouldn't it be nice to hold hands on Saturday with some other people who feel sad and upset and angry and freaked out by the whole thing, too?

I think… Continue

How do Albuquerque REALTORS survive the worst real estate market in recent history?

Real estate Darwinism

Perspective: 2020 Re-Envision

By Inman News, Tuesday, March 2, 2010.

Inman NewsToday's brokers and agents who survive and lead us out of this current mess are going to be those most willing to change. They will share three key attributes: they will be the most competent in their craft, utilize all available technology, and be the most dedicated to customer service.

It seems like that should be the case today, but some, and perhaps a… Continue

A Proper Title Eludes Me, So This Will Have To Do

Tonight we'll be taking delivery of a new old used desk. A guy named Archie (I think) from Thrift Town on Menaul offered to bring it to us since the desk is not disassembleable (I doubt that's a real word, actually, unless it is once it's published, in which case I deem it open source; have fun!), and therefore has not a hope of fitting into the Yaris.

The desk at which I'm currently sitting is a cherry veneer executive-style… Continue

Everyone's a Lobo - even if you don't have the mtn. network

In light of the Lobos starting off their season undefeated - I'm reminded why I don't like television. Since August 27, 2008 - UNM Lobo games have been broadcast on channel 616 on DIRECTV CHOICE or with a subscription to DIRECTV's Sportspack.

I'm a fan...grew up watching the Lobos on channel 13...listening to games on 770 KKOB...wishing I could go to Coop Camp - Michael Cooper was my first favorite NBA player as a kid. Anyone from Burque knows what Lobo basketball means to the city.… Continue

Abroad In The Land

Know what's awesome? Not in the continent-forming, solar flare, oceans rising to conquer the land sense, but in the d00d! sense of the word as it's used in parlance these days?

Road trips. Road trips rock.

Give me a car (and while you're at it, a competent driver, because I don't like to eat and drive at the same time and we should all be grateful for this), a couple of Micky Diaz's sausage bisquits, a tallish coffee, and a… Continue
