Rocky Arroyo died today, January 17, 2015. He was one of the greatest basketball players, one of the greatest referees, and one the greatest coaches in the state's history. He was recently named to the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, but had not yet been inducted. Here is a recent interview that details much of his life story, including his time at UNM, his intellect, his time coaching at Bernalillo High and Our Lady of Sorrows High, and his involvement with the great Mexican eatery,…Continue
I couldn't wait to pluck the Albuquerque Journal out of my drive this morning to learn if it would hang with the word "Pit."
But the newspaper hung so tough that its headline didn't even mention that it was an Aggie-Lobo game. "Showdown In the Pit" was the entire headline, as if to emphasis their protection of this sacred name. The names "UNM" and "Lobos" didn't show up until deep into the second paragraph.

It's great to see two of New Mexico's four rural colleges from opposite sides of the state get together in the big city -- Albuquerque -- for a basketball doubleheader featuring the men's and women's teams.
Hopefully there will be a big crowd, with Albuquerqueans on the rosters of these teams from Silver City (Western New Mexico University) and Portales (Eastern New Mexico University).. About half of the roster members are New Mexicans, unlike…Continue
Retired Albuquerque Journal state editor Fritz Thompson, an Albuquerque resident and a graduate of the University of New Mexico, has written a book about his hometown, Wagon Mound, N.M.
It’s about ranching, basketball and girlfriends. Its title is “The Life and Times of Fritz Thompson.”
Fritz didn’t write it for you. He wrote it “primarily for [his] city dweller [Albuquerque raised] daughters." He describes it as an “unsophisticated narration that defines growing-up-country…Continue
