Morning Fix: Weightless Again

  • Miss those 18 MPH speed limit signs on the Silver Bike Boulevard? The city says "vandals" took them down...color me skeptical.
  • The deal behind the casino at the Albuquerque Downs is still murky, but one thing is clear:…

Look Both Ways. The life you save may be my own.

I just missed being killed while riding my bike. That’s not an exaggeration. I was riding westbound on Constitution in the bike lane (around 9:30am, 4/6/11). I had a green light as I crossed San Mateo. A man driving southbound on San Mateo in the far right lane didn’t appear to be slowing down for the red light. I panicked when I looked at him and saw his head turned far to he right as he prepared to roll through the intersection (running the red). I screamed, “DUDE! DUDE!” He snapped his…

Carless in Albuquerque

Thinking about giving up your car?

Mindy and I have been documenting our experience.

Wandering on White Mesa

You want to tell people about hiking on White Mesa. You want to describe what it looks like. You use words like "views," "panoramas," "vistas" and "pretty." You mention the natural springs bubbling out of mounds, the crackling layers of minerals and how the ground around the trails is actually alive. None of it does…

Bikers Beware

Bikers Beware: City Plans to Balance Budget by Citing Bicyclists

After 5 years of making the arduous trek in my car to CNM’s WS campus, this summer I was transferred to Main Campus, an easy bike commute. To mark the occasion, I donated my piece of crap CO2 spewing Ford Escort to KUNM and became a biker.

Years ago the thought of giving up my car and relying on my bike was about as abhorrent an idea as listening to a born-again preacher ramble on about how much… Continue

Silver Bike Blvd. Speedracers

I work at place on an intersection along Silver, just south of UNM. We watch and hear dozens of cars every day that go flying along the bicycle boulevard at speeds far above the posted 18 mph limit. That strange speed limit is supposed to catch drivers by surprise and make them slow down because of how eye-catching it is. Of course, that assumes that people are even reading posted signs. (And that the visual clutter along our roadways is somehow helpful.… Continue

Narrow and Wide

It's Pancake Sunday! Been awhile since we've had a breakfast o' flapjacks, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm hoping we still have the Snoqualmie Falls pancake mix. What restaurants in Albuquerque make good pancakes? Anyone? Anyone?

Oops, and flapjacks aren't really pancakes. Thanks, Wikipedia.

I have a bone to pick, and hopefully that bone I seek to pick won't be (a), MINE, and (b), plucked from the side… Continue

Bike Path to Balloon Fiesta Park

Interested in avoiding traffic and taking a 'green' ride to this year's Balloon Fiesta? Albuquerque's bike trail system will soon connect to Balloon Fiesta Park.

The bike trail underpasses at Paseo del Norte and Alameda Blvd. are completed. This trail provides safe north-south passage along the west side of the AMAFCA north diversion channel. If you ride by the General Mills plant when they are making cereal, you can smell the sweet scent of childhood breakfasts.

A bike… Continue

Gaspirations

It's time to get busy, judging from last week's tragi-comic bicycle adventure (or Miss Adventure, as it's obvious our relationship is not on a first-name basis).

Call it an acclimation proclamation, a call to harms. In short, I'm going to have to go out on the bike and hurt myself over and over again. It just needs doing, else I'll remain standing beside the road sniveling "Mommy! The stupid old air HURT me!"

The facts are these: Last week I kitted up (that is, I donned… Continue

In The Land Of Enchantment

Dang. We did it.

After months of planning, and saving as best

we could, and second-guessing ourselves, and being thrilled at the

prospect while at the same time being nearly paralyzed by the amorphous

spectre of “what if?”, we finally made good our threat to move to

Albuquerque. Our apartment here is still in disarray (knick-knacks to

place, pictures to hang), but it already feels like a home. I'm sitting

here looking out of a window at sunshine and blue… Continue

Playing with the Toys on Old Route 66

"You can get a lot farther with a kind word and a gun than a kind word alone."

Al Capone

Today I took the Goldwing out for a run along old route 66. It was really windy and as usual, no one around. So I took out my toy to play a bit. This weekend I am going to Juarez for a little visit, I will be packing, my camera that is.…

The Gnome, The Monsignor, and other delights of Albuquerque's Halloween Bike Ride

Bicycling 11 miles with a wig and face paint is far better if you're not alone. Last night, at least 50 cyclists gathered like a freak show at Triangle Park for a Halloween joy ride through Albuquerque. From Nob Hill to downtown and Old Town, we cruised with only minimal incident -- a lost pink wing, a showdown with a muscle truck. Final stop: Marble… Continue

Albuquerque - Jamaican Me Angry!

Ok, I'm sorry to those of you who read this and know me in real life but Albuquerqians - Jamaican Me Angry!

I have not bothered to ride a bike in our great Duke City for quite some time on the basis that at 12 years old you are unable to protect yourself from 2 undeniable sources of harm: The Law and Everyone Else.

First of all, the Law does not allow for bikers to ride on sidewalks because bicycles are considered motorized vehicles. Yeah, at the athletic age of 12 at… Continue

A couple of random City of Albuquerque Spring Thoughts

I know it's an uninspired title, but one with a sort of double meaning... I have spent the better part of the last 14+ years relishing in the Random-ness of this place I call home.

If you have an hour or so to spend reading all my Hyperlinks, then here's to you:

Like right now, for example. I am crunching on leftover Matzoh at my desk at work, royally f-ing off on some important TPS Reports. Prior to this weekend I had… Continue
