Base State Budget on Economic Development

With only a few weeks left in the 50th legislature the halls are filled with all kinds of aphorisms about our state’s budget.  The usual dichotomy is between those who want to cut spending and those who want to to raise revenues.  Underneath each option is a wide range of specific proposals, but there is another force at play driving our state’s budget and our local economy, that until recently has seen little attention.

Tax expenditures, the tax…

NM Game Jam in July

Whew... I noticed I rarely update *this* blog, so here goes.

The next big event for me/"us" is the NM Game Jam to be held at UNM's ARTS Lab, July 10th through 12th.

What is it? Well, based on the great experience several of us had with Global Game Jam back in January, the core team at our Rio Grande IGDA Chapter decided to so a similar event here this summer: getting groups of game developers, designers, programmers and artists… Continue

Lunch presentation on Nob Hills application to the Main Street program.

For the past few months I've been a part of the Proposed Historic Nob Hill District Main Street Steering Committee, we've come along way in the application process, which is almost complete. This Friday, the 10th, is the final assessment by the NM Main Street directors (part of the State Department of Economic Development,) as to the readiness of Nob Hill to participate. Part of the agenda on Friday is a public lunch for those who wish to know more about the program, what it has to offer, and… Continue

want a Grocery Store Downtown?

Hey young and old urbanites, I wish to address an issue that so many of my downtown friends and clients bring up... "We need a quality, full scale grocery store Downtown!"

It has gotten to the point in the last l5 or so years of active redevelopment of the urban core that we have HIT THE WALL with our progress! Buyer's come to me wanting to move downtown and many end up buying elsewhere because of access to a reasonable grocery store. Or, they buy downtown and want to sell a couple… Continue

Notification and "standing" of non recognized Neighborhood Associations on zoning and planning issues

In listening to the City Council meeting of December 15, 2008 (AC-08-23 and the discussion regarding “notification”) I continue to be astounded by the degree to which some of our our elected officials embrace an archaic concept of privilege in matters of government information.

During the conversation regarding notification of land use matters scheduled to be heard by the EPC (or Council) to individuals, coalitions and non-recognized (alternative) neighborhood organizations… I saw… Continue

There Will Be Blood, SunCal Style

For me, great movies stick in my head for weeks after I've seen them. I like to chew on them for a while in my head to fully digest the themes and underlying meaning. There Will Be Blood, starring Daniel Day Lewis, falls into that category. It's a profound saga of family and greed centered on one man's search for oil in the American west, and I've been chewing on it for a couple of months now.

I recently carved new meaning from… Continue
