2016: Year in Rose-Colored Glasses Review

We haven't seen too many "2016: Year in Review" articles/stories/blog posts yet, and that might be because it's just now December 20th, but it's probably far more likely that everyone required to write reviews is so dreading the prospect of reviewing a year so awful, so heinous that recapping it will…

Fireworks ban affects more than the forests

With the holiday weekend, right around the corner and the explosive fire conditions clouding the skies with an ominous haze and clouding the future of the existence of fireworks in the state. With statelaw makers proposing the ban of fireworks in emergency conditions (i.e. now), and grocery stores pulling there store…

Fire in the Foothills

Just snapped these photos on Tramway, headed South. (Apologies for the fast-moving cell-phone snaps!)

There's a fire in the foothills near Menaul. It looked like it was going uphill, away from the houses.

As we drove past, fire trucks were responding, and a big water tanker passed us as we were getting onto the freeway.…

Huning Castle Apartments Fire: One Year Anniversary

huning highland castle apartments

We are approaching the one year anniversary of the Downtown Apartment Fire at the historic Huning Castle Apartments which took place August 3rd, 2009.

I don't know of any 'good' that has come of this fire other than this year's story line from Br Ba (AMC TV's Breaking Bad) which utilized actual scenes shot from the KOBtv… Continue

!st Street Rail Yard Fire

So what did you do Saturday afternoon of the Big Memorial Day Weekend?...We ran out and filmed this fire behind the Orpheum (aka 500 2nd Street) downtown...Quite a stay-cation of excitement and a lot of smelly smokage...A dozen photographs follow without captions. The last one shows that AFD was able to deal with the fire efficiently and successfully.…

Today was the official re-opening of the Zimmerman Library public basement space since the fire that ravaged the reference section 2 years ago today. I was graduating with my B.A. in Linguistics that semester, and it was only by circumstance that my own research wasn't affected. Finding out about the fire shocked me, and made me uneasy in realizing that to some people, there is no sacredness in the idea and physical representation of institutions of higher learning.

Since that time we've… Continue

El Rey Theater - Put Your Cleanup Where Your Mouth Is!

For all those who have spoken about how sad it is that the Golden West burned and the El Rey and Launchpad have suffered damage, a chance to get in and do something about it, for the El Rey at least.

I received the following email from the City, specifically the Mayor's office, today.

Dear community volunteer:

The following volunteer opportunity might be of interest to you. Please share this list with your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, youth group,… Continue

Launchpad Status After Golden West Fire?

A moment of silence for The Golden West Saloon. Good luck to Kathy Zimmer as she (hopefully) begins the process of rebuilding.

Anyone have any update on the state of Launchpad? I've heard major smoke and water damage, and the website says it is temporarily closed. What an… Continue
