Getting down in Old Town

I love Old Town. Especially when the weather starts getting warmer and all the musicians and artsy type folks start creeping out of their burrows. It reminds of a time that probably won't be seen again. A time before the gatherings around a town center didn't involve plastic totems and tourism.

My wife loves it too because it reminds her of Guadalajara, where she grew up. We met there after we had broken up for the fifth or sixth time… Continue

Let's put it to the tourists, or how to bite the hand that feeds you.

As an innkeeper, I belong to all the regular innkeeping groups and stay tight with the associations that watch dog what is going on in the legislature regarding tourism in NM.

So, I got a notice today from TANM (Tourism Association of NM) via the NM Bed & Breakfast Association. Apparently there is a freshman Senator from Corrales who thinks it would be a good idea to add a statewide lodge tax of 10% on all lodging across the board - statewide. Let me tell you something about… Continue

Hillsboro New Mexico

Up the Black Range from Truth or Consequences is the little "ghost" town of Hillsboro New Mexico, it is not really a ghost town, there are a couple of vintage motels, cafe's… Continue

Where is everybody?

Albuquerque is no longer considered a gateway, but a destination, thanks in part to our ACVB's Marketing efforts. But I see gloom and doom in the future with Albuquerque tourism.

I have been an innkeeper in Albuquerque for almost 9 years, and I have never seen a time as slow as this winter. We usually have a slow time of it in November, December and January, but this year we have less than 10% of the bookings… Continue

Change Downtown

Being in the business of tourism, I am a recipient of lots of stuff pertinent to this industry. We all know there has been a push to make big changes downtown; to create a design to bring in more big conventions and more tourist dollars. What exists now isn't enough to draw in large scale groups. The feeling is that New Mexico has so much to offer, and we are already an attractive tourist destination, but we can't monopolize on this unless we create a… Continue

Corporate Folks & Balloon Fiesta

Just wanted to mention that Balloon Fiesta has a few corporate sponsor Fiesta Tents still available for this year's event. I think prime nights for tents on average run around $3,500. Although budgets are tight this year for all of us, could be a good networking / customer appreciation event if your company is large enough (or you have sponsor partners to hold such an event).

If interested, feel free to shoot me your information and I will connect you with Balloon Fiesta's events /… Continue
