The brightest moon of the year is out tonight...

A full perigee moon over Albuquerque

And without a telescope,
there's mars to the left of the moon
These shots were from South Broadway...Might have to drive out to the mesas for another view.

JUST-in from SpaceWeather.com:->FULL MOON AND MARS: Friday night's full Moon is the biggest and brightest full Moon of the year. It's a "perigee Moon," as much as 14% wider and 30% brighter than other full Moons you'll see later in 2010.
But that's not all. Mars is having a close encounter with Earth, and on Friday night, Jan. 29th, it will join the Moon for an all-night-long conjunction.

New Mexico Bowl '09
Gorgeous Day here for the not-so-big opening "Bowl Game" right here in Albuquerque (ESPN). Pity east coasters getting walloped with snowage on Super Shopper Saturday...Wonder how the President moves around when the rest of DC is snowed in with BLIZZARD conditions? Time to hook Bo up to the dogsled. Can't picture the Obam…

The Tiger
Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?…

It doesn't help that under the best circumstances, I still hate the whole process of buying eye glasses. First comes the dilated eyes for a 'prescription' which is only valid for a year. Then comes the
2 for 1 sales where you go in and find that the only glasses for the cheapo price really and truly suck. No really, the $38.00 glasses wouldn't suit a mummified monkey.
Oh yeah, don't forget to add in the SCRATCH resistant lenses, only $29.00 on the first pair; $19.00 more for that 'free'…

My wife,
Debra Landau, shares this note:
I've never been much into the whole celebrity sightings/gossip thing, but then I live in Albuquerque. But what's a girl to do when the celebrity encounters her? OK, I was sitting in Flying Star, reading the Journal and, as usual, wondering why I was reading the Journal, when I heard, "Excuse me ..." And there before mine eyes did appear the handsome and talented actor,
Giancarlo Esposito…

All the news about Woodstock has
taken me back over the weekend.
About as close as I will ever get to seeing the Jefferson Airplane
et al is taking a guitar class with Jorma Kaukonen. Or, although
Stella Blue has gone
beaucoups francaise thinking back to '03 when
Paul Kantner came to Albuquerque. It was a fun night for the audience.

JUST-in from SpaceWeather.com:->MONDAY MORNING SKY SHOW: Set your alarm for dawn. On Monday morning, Aug. 17th, Venus and the crescent Moon will gather beautifully close together in the eastern sky. For many observers in North America, the International Space Station (ISS) will make an appearance, too. It's a fantastic way to begin the day.

TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT, look for the
Perseid Meteor shower overhead...This year's Perseid meteor shower could be even better than usual. According to NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, a filament of comet dust has drifted across Earth's path and when Earth passes through it, sometime between 0800 and 0900 (midnight-1:00a.m. our time) the Perseid meteor rate could surge to twice its normal value.
There is one light you cannot escape on August 12th. The 55% g…

If you were wondering what that smokey smell is/was in the downtown area last night, it was a large fire at Central and 14th. Smoke filled the nearly full moon night blowing east from downtown into other areas of Albuquerque. Here is a Picasa gallery of photographs taken by Jeff Hartzer.

My classes with the Citizen Police Academy (APD) continue to provide a unique look at our unique city...
We went on a
lovely field trip this past Sunday afternoon to the
Office of the Medical Investigator. Yes, there are a number of those coolers with bodies in bags like you might see on teevee (minus the smell). Ok, it was a pretty grim 'field trip', however, one thing that came out of it is, that we learned that you can, after deceasing of course,
donate your bones to the UNM…

Blackberrying, Facebooking, and
twittering through life these days makes me think EMAIL may be as DEAD as the Postal Service. No one answers or writes a
good juicy long email anymore...And no one it seems, actually READS a long one very carefully.
Also along these lines how is the DCF audience number-count doing in 2009?
