Ed Asner as Roosevelt

Ed Asner is pretty much what you expect him to be: a very straightforward human being. The man known to many as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and to a new generation as the voice of Carl Fredricksen in the movie Up doesn't pull many punches.

I met Mr. Asner in Sarasota, Florida, following a performance of FDR, which he is performing across the country. As he entered the room and sat down, he asked me how I liked the performance. Before I could say a… Continue

Bad News Travels Deep

Bad news is hard to break, no matter what it is. It’s particularly difficult to break bad news that goes against the purpose of your enterprise.

This week, we at Popejoy Hall have had to tell patrons who had already bought tickets that Forever Tango was not coming, that the company had canceled the tour. Obviously we could do nothing but send notices to patrons and call as many as possible to forewarn them.

That’s when we heard the stories.

One man from Las… Continue

More Equal

It may be time to incorporate myself. I could watch my stock rise and fall in the markets. I could elect myself chairman of my own board. Or not. But the most fun is that now, by Supreme Court rule, I can make more noise and have more influence in elections than I can simply being me.

The trouble might be in choosing what kind of corporation to be. If I chose to be an energy company, must I… Continue

The Spirit of Cooperation

I’ve been thinking a lot about cooperation lately. I’m not sure why. Maybe I’ve been watching the lack of cooperation in Congress and am hoping for better.

Whatever the roots, my thoughts tend toward the performing arts. Artists are known for their egos and their temperaments, but what they should be known for instead is their cooperative attitude, especially those in the performing arts. Yes, there are those whose egos become impediments to cooperation, but most performers I’ve… Continue

34 Gigabytes a Day

In this season of counting calories, I found another statistic last month that concerns me about how much I’m consuming. The New York Times reported that we Americans take in 34 gigabytes of information each day.

That translates to 100,000 words a day. Written or spoken, printed or televised, texted or phoned. And the variety of sources grows constantly: YouTube, Facebook,… Continue

Gifts All Our Lives

In this season of gift giving, I find myself feeling very lucky. I’ve lived much of my life working in and around the performing arts and a couple of days ago, it occurred to me why I so enjoy live performances. When someone performs for an audience, he or she is showing humanity at its best.

Working at Popejoy Hall the past decade and a half, I’ve watched audiences react to some very special performances. There’s a transformative magic in an exceptional live performance, an alchemy… Continue

Dreams on Stage

Theater should have relevance to people’s lives. That’s why Of Mice and Men in Popejoy this Thursday is on my list of shows to see: it speaks directly to the death of the American Dream.

When I saw the show in Virginia this past spring, I also had a chance to speak to the director and its two lead actors. Each of them talked about the central theme of the dreams that each of the… Continue
