What's going on, Albuquerque?
I was eating footlongs there in 1956. Same neon sign, location changed by a few yards.
How did it change by a few yards? Was there an earthquake? Ha!
Someone reminded me it was used in Breaking Bad...
The road formed a Y at that point as I remember. Central veered slightly to the northwest, and another street, I know not the name of it, came in on the the southwest. The restaurant sat on the inside of the Y instead of the south side of Central where it is now. Someone else can probably describe it better, and I wish they would verify it for me.
I see that the road is angled in that area now so I can imagine it was altered. I've always wondered about that strange merging of Central and Lomas by Old Town. Maybe some road relocation there too?
Yes, but I think what you describe came somewhat later, maybe not. The fact is restaurant had to move or the road couldn't be built, I believe. There was something absolutely charming about it being their on an island, all by itself, and parking in back. I wish some other old timer could read this and clarify. Certainly I am not the oldest person in the city. Am I?
It does sound charming. No, you're not the oldest! But I bet a lot of people who'd remember the dog house in 1956 haven't made the leap into the internet. I'd love to see pics from South Valley (your 'hood?) back then. Have you scanned many? D
My 'hood along Isleta Highway (old US-85) on the west side of the river is about what you'd see along South Broadway. We had Kodaks with no focus mechanism in those days, and only took pictures of people posing with little background. There are opportunities for the kind of photos you shoot, however, along Isleta Highway. My house has been recently torn down or I'd point you to it. I'll think about it. And the next time I drive through I'll keep my eye out for what I think you would like to shoot. My old street is Bonita Rd., (a misnomer for sure). It runs between Isleta Highway and La Vega Road. The area is still rough, but the road has been paved and most of the outhouses have disappeared.
