Really sad about the Lottery. I thought UNM was taking steps and suggesting changes to keep in solvent at least a few more years. I know they held a few town halls last year. And I'm at a total loss for words for the Griego tragedy.
Comment by Hunter on January 23, 2013 at 9:48am Last time I looked a full-time (12-15 units) load at CNM of UNM transferable classes was somewhere in the neighborhood of $1200. The cost of student fees alone at UNM, before tuition, was about the same. UNM needs to raise admission requrements to address the abysmal matriculation rates and the legislature needs to revisit lottery rules for junior college tuition to give lower performing HS grads a real chance at college success instead of just throwing them to the lobos.
Comment by tesuquedog on January 23, 2013 at 10:35am APS is making a really good effort this year to help students fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). They are hosting workshops and assistance throughout the spring.

The lottery story is from back in November...I kind of thought action had since been taken to keep the scholarship running for at least a while longer. Does anyone know?
Comment by Adelita on January 23, 2013 at 10:43am Good eye Phil_O...I wonder why that story popped up in my search? Hmmm. See, the DCF community really does stay on top of things!
My suggestion for the lottery program is to turn it into a loan program - if you stay in state and work, then you should get a year-by-year forgiveness for your loan. If you have to move out-of-state, then you get to pay it back, but for a longer term. This might prevent some of the brain-drain situation for NM students, who basically thank the state for paying for their education by moving to Colorado (like virtually all the kids who went to school with my son) or Texas (another chunk of kids). I understand the situation, but we need the scholarship program to help our state, not adjacent states.
This would also allow the program to assist students who want to go to community college, or who didn't go to school right after high school.
