Maybe the scholarships can be given to students who promise to quit smoking when they go to college.....
Comment by once banned twice shy on March 6, 2013 at 10:20am Hmmmm....wonder if it would have any impact on NM children's obesity rates if parents stopped driving their children to the front door of their school (and to every other activity) and instead had them ride their bikes, walk or take the bus?
Comment by hettie on March 6, 2013 at 4:29pm My understanding is that elementary school kids get one session of p.e. a week. Aside from recess, during which lots of kids engage in non-aerobic activity, kids don't seem encouraged to get exercise through play at school. It's a shame there isn't more time and funding for p.e. in those early school years, when it could have a positive effect on kids' health and long-term exercise habits.
Comment by Kenny on March 6, 2013 at 7:00pm It might be nice to hear from some current parents of elementary-aged children concerning the widespread practice of driving their kids to school.
I'm an old fart, to be sure, but still even as recently as the mid-80's, my youngest brother never got driven to school.
Comment by Big Stamen on March 7, 2013 at 7:22am I drove my kids to school when they were elementary-aged.
We lived more than 3 miles from the school. We chose an out of district school. If we would have sent them to the in district school, we still would have driven them to school. Reason being is the constant bombardment from the media of bad things happening. That has instilled a fear in many parents minds (mine included).
