I had mixed feelings about interim Chief Banks, until I saw the Larry Barker piece on the joy riding.  No hard feelings Chief but I'm now convinced that any hope of changing the culture at APD will require a substantial infusion of outsiders, starting at the top.  Remember, in Texas it's chili.

NM movie rankings may be down, but get ready for an Ethan Hawke sighting, Albuquerque.

Yet another story showing that APD has some serious, serious problems.  This is a department that obviously thinks the law simply doesn't apply to them.  Problem is, none of our city councilors nor the mayor seem to think we have a problem with our police department.

And no, the governor is not listening. She views any criticism of her appointees as just politically driven and will dig in her heels to protect her appointees--no matter how ill-qualified they may be.  Too bad she will easily win re-election, in spite of how terrible she has been for this state.

Oh, and how can I forget APD completely ignoring Omaree's 911 call where adults in his household are heard verbally abusing him (and speaking of physically abusing him) for SEVERAL MINUTES.  WTF?

Hunter, I agree. It increasingly seems like the best solution for APD would be bringing in all new leadership and rebuilding things from the ground up. As the recent piece on APD violence in the Alibi makes clear, the force's problems go back decades and the "solutions" thus far amount ot window dressing. Unfortunately, I don't see any indication that the Berry administration has the political will to do that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the police problems didn't go back to the early 1880's when they were called the Merchant Police. They weren't employed by the public but by the merchants as a private police force.

" It increasingly seems like the best solution for APD would be bringing in all new leadership and rebuilding things from the ground up."

That could be said for nearly all government entities.

True, ramon, but the need at APD seems especially pressing. The problems have moved beyond embarrassment to represent a real threat to the well-being of the city and its inhabitants.

"That could be said for nearly all government entities."

Really?  Which entities and why, specifically?

2 questions about that, ramon: Who ends up dead because of Accounts Payable, and how often do they get investigated by the Department of Justice?

I know Berry, like Martinez, has reduced the size of city government across the board, leaving vacancies unfilled and eliminating many vacant positions. Maybe some of those vacancies were actually needed? Maybe actually paying attention to the business of running a city and making sure government can provide the services it is obligated to is more important than having a few extra pennies to rattle around in the general fund? It's certainly more important than paving the bosque...
